Chapter 8: The Remains in the Cabinet

So, to devour you for a lifetime.
It really means to devour.
Wu Xian shook his head. After admiring the photo for a moment, he asked again.
“May I ask who Wang Zhiwu is? Your wife receives a sum of money from him every month—ten thousand yuan—without any reason…”
“Enough!”
The freezer trembled violently, and Wu Xian began to feel a bone-chilling cold.
“Do you insist on exposing all my scars? I have wronged Juan’er, so no matter how she treated me, I have no regrets. Even if I die, I don’t want her to bear a bad reputation!”
“How much longer will you delay?”
“So you truly love her, huh? That’s no problem. I’ll find a way to get you out.”
Wu Xian lazily stood up, found a sunny spot, opened a window, dismantled the bed board to place in front of the window, and tied the freezer with ropes.
When he said Wang was dishonest, he wasn't referring to their emotional entanglement.
Rather, it was about Wang’s identity.
To be threatened by a woman, and even in death have someone pay money on his behalf—this indicates a serious leverage. Moreover, Liu Juan hated him to such an extent…
Mr. Wang is a villain!
Wu Xian didn’t know how malevolent spirits came to be, but Wang was obviously a disturbed soul of a deceased person. If a good person becomes such a spirit, maybe there’s a tiny chance they remain benevolent. But a villain turned spirit is one hundred percent malevolent.
Therefore, Wu Xian didn’t believe Wang would keep his promise.
Even if he released him and the curse lifted, so what?
Sharing a room with a malevolent spirit wouldn’t prevent attacks, would it?
Though Wu Xian had true fire spells and a copper coin sword, he couldn’t waste all his resources on such a place!
So since Wang couldn’t control anything beyond the freezer, Wu Xian decided to release him in a clever way.
He tied the freezer with ropes and pushed it from the bed board to the window.
Wang felt the movement and asked Wu Xian suspiciously.
“I feel like my coffin is moving.”
Wu Xian replied perfunctorily, “Oh, I found the key, but the chains have been locked too long; they need some movement to loosen.”
“Then please hurry up. I won’t treat you unfairly.”
A cold sneer appeared on Wang’s mutilated face inside the freezer. Once he got out, he would lock Wu Xian inside the freezer.
Anyone who knew his secret would die.
Moreover…

He wanted to kill!
Since awakening inside the freezer, he had gone mad with mischief. Why could other malevolent spirits kill for pleasure, but he had to be trapped in a cold box?
He was also curious about what Zhao Juan did to him.
Was it really so delicious?
He wanted to try it too.
“It’s about to open, please bear with me.”
Wu Xian stepped back two steps, then kicked the freezer perched on the window with a flying kick!
“Get lost!”
Bang!
The freezer fell straight down with a loud crash. The lid broke off and flew away, scattering countless shards of ice and Wang’s broken corpse all over the ground.
Dim sunlight shone down, casting black smoke from the corpse. Wang howled, scrambled up, quickly reassembled his shattered limbs, and fled into the shadows, disappearing.
Wu Xian happily withdrew his head from the window, sweat beading his brow as his body temperature gradually rose. Checking his companion’s status, the curse had lifted.
“Hey, it really works. Seems like the rules of this blessed land are quite flexible.”
…
After lifting the curse, Wu Xian didn’t rush to leave.
He searched the room again. Since entering this blessed land, all the good things on him had been obtained in dangerous places.
Kill the spirit, gain incense; explore the perilous land, meet the mysterious.
By analogy, Wang’s house—where the freezer with the corpse was hidden—should also conceal good things.
Before, when Wang was alive, Wu Xian found nothing. This time, he quickly made a new discovery.
First, a fist-sized longevity peach. Picking it up, a new line appeared on his status screen.
[Small Longevity Peach]: Can be taken out of the blessed land. Eating outside extends lifespan; eating inside heals wounds; offering to deities wards off disaster.
(Note: Praying to gods carries a small chance of calamity—Heaven Official brings evil, Earth Official brings punishment, Water Official curses. Offering a longevity peach guarantees no negative effects when praying.)
Wu Xian understood.
“So the reason I got involved with Wang was because I offended the Water Official.”
But what caught Wu Xian’s attention most was other information revealed in the note. He was now almost certain that the statues of gods were divided into three types: Heaven Official, Earth Official, and Water Official. Worshiping them yields different rewards and brings different calamities.
“My first prayer before entering the blessed land was near three statues. Perhaps those three are the Three Officials who govern Heaven, the Underworld, and the Waters!”
“What about the other statue?”
Wu Xian put away the longevity peach and looked at another find—a hideous statue in the master bedroom wardrobe. It was blind and deaf, cloaked in green robes, with an inscription beneath.

“Heaven Official Kui Xing, the master of official rank and wealth!”
All he needed was one more incense stick to come here and worship at any time!
Wu Xian covered the statue and rummaged through the drawers until he found a toolbox, then left Wang’s house.
As before, Wu Xian didn’t want to risk entering a sealed space with no escape, using his life to test the elevator’s safety.
So he took the stairs.
The stairwell was somewhat eerie. The ceiling light had long since broken. On the way up, some sunlight filtered through windows; on the way down, only faint scattered light remained. The white paint on the walls peeled off, bricks and cement were damp, giving a cold and clammy feeling.
Wu Xian kept a rhythmic tap with his footsteps, humming a tune as he descended without incident to the first floor. He placed his hand on the apartment door handle, ready to push it open, when suddenly his hand was pushed back, and he stepped back in surprise.
The door handle was icy cold; the lock core frozen solid, completely impossible to open!
Wu Xian’s humming stopped abruptly. Turning to go back upstairs, he saw the stairwell plunged into pitch darkness, even the narrow window seemed sealed by something.
Oppression, darkness, and cold surged. Silence enveloped him; he could only hear his own breathing and heartbeat.
Suddenly, a pair of frost-covered pale arms reached from behind and wrapped around Wu Xian’s neck!
Wang leaned on Wu Xian’s shoulder, whispering with a sinister cold laugh.
“Ha, we meet again.”
If Wu Xian turned his head now, he would see Wang’s horrifying frozen face, flesh missing, lips gone, teeth chattering as he whispered into Wu Xian’s ear.
“You saved me, and I haven’t repaid you yet. Why are you leaving?”
“I do good deeds without expecting anything in return!”
“Nonsense!”
Wu Xian dryly explained, “Don’t misunderstand. The freezer’s chains really wouldn’t open. I had no choice but to break it violently to save you. It was never my intention to kill you by pushing you off the ninth floor.”
Wang laughed coldly, exhaling frost onto Wu Xian’s ear.
“Did you know?”
“When a person’s body temperature drops to a certain point, the thermoregulatory center malfunctions. They feel hot, take off their clothes, and seek cold until, like me, they’re frozen through and through.”
“Now… are you starting to feel hot?”
Wu Xian pondered for two seconds.
“I’m still a bit cold. But you… don’t you feel warm?”
Wang blinked his remaining left eye.
He actually did feel a little warm!
