Although the handsome man had already introduced himself, Second Sister-in-law Shi was still tense all over, maintaining her vigilance. In this wasteland, it was impossible to tell who was human and who was not. As a delicate and beautiful woman facing mercenaries who worked only for money, her cautiousness was entirely justified. At the same time, Second Sister-in-law Shi was grateful that Shi Yuebai had deliberately not helped her wash her face that morning. The dirt on her face somewhat concealed her appearance.

“Don’t be afraid, Second Sister-in-law,” Yi Zhe quickly said, sensing her nervousness. “I came to find you because Aunt Shi is currently with our mercenary group.”

As he spoke, Yi Zhe furrowed his brow and glanced at Shi Yaoyao on Second Sister-in-law Shi’s back, as well as Shi Yuebai, who was being pushed along. “I’m sorry, Second Sister-in-law. When I and my men arrived, Shi Yi, Shi Er, and Uncle Shi...” The men of the Shi family had died in a night raid by mutated beasts.

Outside the city, mutated creatures would periodically gather and attack survivor teams living beyond the city walls. Every survivor group would send out night watchers. That night, many people died, and numerous survivors were mauled beyond recognition. When Yi Zhe arrived with his mercenaries and scattered the mutated monsters, what remained was a scene of severed limbs and gore—a true hell on earth.

Upon counting survivors, they found Aunt Shi hiding in a large iron barrel, surrounded by three male corpses reduced to mere bones—likely the remains of the Shi men. Yi Zhe had been busy fighting mutated beasts with his squad these past few days, and Aunt Shi had slipped into unconsciousness. There was no time to take her back, so she had been staying with the mercenary group.

Today, finally having a moment to spare, Yi Zhe intended to notify Second Sister-in-law Shi. When he reached the edge of the survivor team’s territory, he saw her approaching in a pitiful state. Yi Zhe frowned, unsure how to tell her to bring Aunt Shi back. Everyone in the wasteland understood the gravity of losing all the men in the family. Under such circumstances, Second Sister-in-law Shi’s life would be far harder than that of most women.

Moreover, Aunt Shi was pregnant and soon to give birth, which only compounded Second Sister-in-law Shi’s burdens. To be honest, despite the situation, she had not abandoned Shi Yaoyao and Shi Yuebai. It was clear that Shi Er had not been mistaken in choosing such a good woman.

The mercenaries following Yi Zhe were at a loss for words and fell into silence. Sitting on a flat handcart, Shi Yuebai made a decision. “Since my mother is with you, please send her back.”

“We’re in a hurry to go to the city to sell potatoes today,” Shi Yaoyao said, shaking her big head awkwardly. “We’re selling zero-radiation-contaminated potatoes.”

A flicker of surprise flashed in Yi Zhe’s sharp eyes as he looked at the obese Shi Yuebai. He recalled that Shi Yi’s sister, the Shi family’s little princess, had been very beautiful—a proud young lady. Now, deformed by radiation but still brave enough to go out, the girl was remarkably resilient. Her personality remained unchanged—firm and decisive.

Yi Zhe remembered seeing Shi Yuebai’s haughty demeanor at Shi Er’s wedding when he accompanied Shi Yi. His impression of her had not been good, but rich families’ little princesses were usually like that. He didn’t mind.

Today, her confident speech gave Shi Yuebai an inexplicable sense of determination. “Zero-radiation-contaminated potatoes?” Yi Zhe diverted his attention from her and said, “We can buy them. How many points do you want for them?”

He didn’t pay much attention to Shi Yaoyao’s words. Since leaving the disbanded garrison team years ago, Yi Zhe had formed his own mercenary group but occasionally kept tabs on former comrades, especially Shi Yi, their closest brother in the garrison. Thus, he knew a bit about the Shi family’s situation.

Shi Yaoyao’s intellect had been impaired by radiation, so her words were unreliable. Yi Zhe’s willingness to buy the Shi family’s potatoes was out of camaraderie toward a teammate’s family.

When Second Sister-in-law Shi took two potatoes from her pocket, Yi Zhe’s radiation detector beeped. He and his mercenaries were stunned to discover that zero-radiation-contaminated food still existed in this world—something they had never seen before. For a moment, Yi Zhe didn’t know what price to offer, and Second Sister-in-law Shi was equally unsure.

Then Shi Yuebai decisively spoke up, “No points. I want 1,000 medium-low radiation potatoes in exchange.”

Yi Zhe and his mercenaries gasped. This arrogant little girl sure had guts to ask for that.

One mercenary pointed at the mountain of flesh that was Shi Yuebai. “You—” His words were cut off by Yi Zhe raising a hand.

“Fine, we’ll buy!” Yi Zhe said. “But we don’t have 1,000 medium-low radiation potatoes. Can we trade with other food?”

Shi Yuebai waved dismissively. “Anything’s fine, just bring the food and my mother together.”

Now that the potatoes had found a buyer, Shi Yuebai saw no need to make a special trip to the city. She instructed Second Sister-in-law Shi, “Let’s go. We’ll continue scavenging.”

“Try to find more bottles and cans today. If we can find some toothpaste, that would be great.”

Her memory told her that previous survivors had cleaned their teeth with toothpaste and toothbrushes. She had never used such luxuries. Yesterday, at a new wasteland area, they had found a box of brand-new toothbrushes. Today, Shi Yuebai prayed for the luck to find a tube of toothpaste.

Second Sister-in-law Shi’s calves trembled. She still hadn’t recovered from Shi Yuebai’s bold demands. Instinctively, she carried Shi Yaoyao on her back, pushed Shi Yuebai in the cart, and turned toward the newly cleared wasteland area.

Yi Zhe looked down at the two zero-radiation potatoes in his hand. Should he call Shi Yuebai naive or generous? She hadn’t even asked for a deposit from him—she had simply walked away so straightforwardly. Was she not afraid Yi Zhe might back out, refusing to give them food or return their mother?

“Captain, how do you eat these two potatoes?” a mercenary asked curiously. They hadn’t eaten zero-radiation potatoes in five years.

Yi Zhe pocketed the potatoes and glared at his men. “Eat? Take them to the city and sell them to the rich.”

“We’ll trade for 2,000 medium-low radiation potatoes—enough to feed our squad for months.”
