Chapter 115: Escalation to Mortal Enemies
In the operating room, the surgery was underway with great intensity. Outside the door, Zhang Wenhao felt a vague sense of anxiety, wondering if the woman could be saved. Just as he was feeling this unease, the system suddenly emitted a long-awaited notification chime.
"Emergency medical aid and acupuncture performed to save a life; the system rewards the user with 1,200 points!"
"The user's current available balance is 1,840 points, with a cumulative total of 3,340 points."
Zhang Wenhao had not expected to earn 1,200 points from this single emergency procedure. However, considering that this rescue was far more difficult and carried much greater risks than the one he performed for Chen Feng, the generous reward from the system seemed reasonable.
Now, he had enough points to redeem the Internet Security skill. His next plan was to use technical means to monitor the entire Hilton Hotel, find an opportunity to eliminate that killer, and then infiltrate the traffic department’s surveillance system to delete all video footage of himself driving the Passat. Once that was done, he could rest easy.
Having obtained the points, Zhang Wenhao did not leave the hospital immediately. He knew the system’s reward was based solely on the emergency treatment he had provided; the system cared nothing for whether she lived or died afterward. But just because the system didn't care didn't mean Zhang Wenhao was only in it for the points. It was a living, breathing human being, and having saved her, he naturally hoped she would ultimately survive.
The surgery lasted for four full hours. During this time, Zhang Wenhao, Li Changyun, Liu Hengshan, and Chen Lili remained outside the emergency room, never leaving their posts. The girl had long since drifted into a deep sleep, leaning involuntarily against Zhang Wenhao's shoulder out of sheer exhaustion. Li Changyun and Liu Hengshan were nodding off on the seats across the hall, while Chen Lili had fallen fast asleep on a bench a little further away.
The doors to the operating room suddenly opened. Li Changyun was the first to react, standing up reflexively. Liu Hengshan was startled awake and followed Li Changyun as they strode over. Zhang Wenhao, who had not closed his eyes, saw the doctor emerge and gently tapped the back of the girl’s hand.
The girl opened her eyes, looking at Zhang Wenhao in a daze. Zhang Wenhao said, "The doctor is out."
"Where?!" The girl stood up instantly, turned to face the operating room door, and hurried toward the doctor, asking, "Doctor, how is my mother?"
Zhang Wenhao felt confident; the fact that the surgery had lasted so long proved the injured woman had not died. Since she had held on for this long, she must have passed the most critical stage.
The doctor, covered in sweat, removed his mask and said with a look of relief, "The patient's condition is temporarily stable. She will be transferred to the ICU immediately. There shouldn't be any major problems."
The girl let out a sigh of relief, her entire body relaxing at once. She cried, "Doctor, thank you. Thank you."
The lead surgeon felt a bit awkward. He knew clearly that the woman's survival was 90 percent due to the doctor who had provided the emergency care. The way the adrenaline had been used with such precise dosage, and the use of silver needles to isolate the lungs from the rest of the body to prevent the injury from affecting other organs—these were techniques not even found in textbooks; they could be called strokes of absolute genius.
He wanted very much to meet that emergency doctor, but there were only two doctors in white coats outside the door—one around thirty, the other only about twenty. He was profoundly astonished.
Zhang Wenhao stood up, stretched, and woke Chen Lili. As soon as she opened her eyes, she asked, "How is the patient?"
Zhang Wenhao smiled faintly and said, "She survived. Let's get going, we're heading back."
Chen Lili nodded excitedly, exclaiming, "Wenhao, you’re truly amazing!"
Zhang Wenhao patted the back of her head. "Enough with the flattery. Let's hurry back; I still need to pick up my car and get to school for class."
"You're still going to class?" Chen Lili urged, "Forget it, just go home and get some rest. You haven't slept all night."
Zhang Wenhao waved his hand. "Pulling an all-nighter isn't a problem for me. Let's go."
The only reason Zhang Wenhao had stayed was to know if the woman would live. Now that he had the answer, he and Chen Lili turned and walked out of the emergency department.
"Aren't you going to call Dr. Li?" Chen Lili asked, surprised, as she was nudged along by Zhang Wenhao.
"I'll call him when we get to the door to avoid unnecessary trouble," Zhang Wenhao said calmly.
Although Chen Lili didn't understand what kind of trouble he meant, she didn't object. When they reached the entrance of the emergency department, Zhang Wenhao turned back and shouted to Li Changyun, who was being pestered by several other doctors, "Old Li, let's go!"
Li Changyun seized the moment when the others were caught off guard and bolted. He reached the door in a few strides and blurted out, "Run! That old man was driving me crazy!"
This was exactly what Zhang Wenhao feared. He had followed Li Changyun only to farm points; he had no desire for fame or to have anyone feel indebted to him. Before leaving, he called out into the hallway, "Miss, if you truly want to thank us, don't try to find us. Just take good care of your mother. Goodbye!"
With that, the three of them fled.
The driver had returned the ambulance to the hospital the previous night, so the three of them had to hail a taxi to the Ren'ai Hospital. Before arriving, Zhang Wenhao took off his white coat and handed it to Li Changyun. "Brother Li, thank you for everything last night."
"I should be the one thanking you." Recalling how foolishly he had initially told Zhang Wenhao to give up on the resuscitation, Li Changyun felt a wave of shame. "You've taught me another lesson. Wenhao, it's a loss to society that you aren't going into medicine. Listen to me, apply to medical school for your college entrance exams."
Zhang Wenhao smiled slightly. "I already have my own plans. Don't you worry about that, Brother Li."
After getting out of the taxi and before getting into his Scirocco, Zhang Wenhao said to them, "If I have time before the exams, I'll come back and join you for emergency shifts."
Li Changyun nodded and smiled. "You're more than welcome. Take my number; call me next time you have time, and I'll arrange it."
Zhang Wenhao took out his phone, exchanged numbers with Li Changyun, and Chen Lili chimed in, "Zhang Wenhao, save my number too."
Zhang Wenhao nodded. Chen Lili recited her number, and he saved it in his phone. "I'll call you; you save mine."
"I've got it!" Chen Lili pointed to her head and smiled. "Remember to think of me and Dr. Li every now and then."
Zhang Wenhao laughed. "Of course. Don't worry, let's grab a meal together sometime."
Chen Lili nodded with a soft smile. "Drive carefully on your way."
After driving back to the neighborhood near his school, Zhang Wenhao switched to his bicycle. He first rode to the bus stop to wait for Su Ruoran, and then they went to school together. Zhang Wenhao's physical condition was exceptional, and a night without sleep had almost no impact on his energy, so Su Ruoran didn't suspect a thing.
Throughout the morning, Zhang Wenhao analyzed how to deal with the killer. The first thing he would do when he got home tonight was use his computer to infiltrate the Hilton's surveillance system. The killer would likely spend the day hunting for clues about him, making his movements unpredictable, but since he was staying at the Hilton, he would definitely return regardless of how late it was. Once he knew which room the killer was in and when he returned, he could find an opportunity to strike.
Having settled on a rough plan, Zhang Wenhao decided not to wait until he got home; he would redeem the Internet Security skill now.
Entering the system, he located the Internet Security skill and chose to redeem it.
The system sent a prompt, and immediately, a vast amount of knowledge regarding internet attack and defense flooded his mind. Being at school, he knew that even if he went home now, he wouldn't gain anything from monitoring the Hilton, so he spent the entire day in his mind familiarizing himself with and organizing the knowledge he had acquired.
When school ended in the evening, Zhang Wenhao rode his bike with Su Ruoran out of the school gates. He had originally intended to pick up the Scirocco and drive her home, but Su Ruoran felt that switching vehicles back and forth was too much trouble. "No need to drive me. Just take me to the bus stop, then you can ride your bike home quickly."
Seeing her insistence, Zhang Wenhao nodded. After dropping her off and watching her board the bus, he prepared to leave.
Just as he got on his bike and started to ride back along the same route, Zhang Wenhao suddenly heard the roar of an engine exploding behind him. The sound grew rapidly closer, and in the blink of an eye, it was right behind him!
A normal person would have instinctively turned around to look, but Zhang Wenhao sensed the danger in the rapidly approaching sound wave. Without looking back, he leaped sideways off his bicycle. Just as he landed, he heard a loud *crash*—his bicycle was struck and sent flying, soaring dozens of meters before finally hitting the ground.
By then, Zhang Wenhao had already dove into the green belt between the sidewalk and the road. With a nimble, rolling landing, he covered himself in leaves and dirt, but he remained completely unharmed.
He immediately stood up and looked forward. A red shadow was wobbling erratically down the sidewalk before swerving back onto the road and speeding away.
"Mo Sinan." Zhang Wenhao stared in the direction where the red light had vanished, gritting his teeth. This guy had been quiet for days, only to brew up such a lethal trap! With the speed he was going, he had truly intended to kill him! This bastard was truly vicious.
Just then, Su Ruoran came sprinting over in a state of panic. While on the bus, she had instinctively looked out the window to watch Zhang Wenhao leave, but the red flash of light had nearly scared the heart out of her.
Recognizing Mo Sinan's Ferrari and seeing Zhang Wenhao's bicycle sent flying, she was terrified out of her wits. She frantically told the driver to pull over, jumped out, and ran back like a maniac. She was terrified that Zhang Wenhao might have been hurt or worse.
When she saw Zhang Wenhao jump out of the green belt and stand right in front of her, tears streamed down her face uncontrollably. She quickened her pace, rushed to him, and threw herself into his arms, sobbing, "As long as you're okay... you scared me to death..."
Zhang Wenhao gently stroked the back of her head, comforting her, "Don't be nervous. Look, I'm perfectly fine."
"Mo Sinan has gone too far. I'm calling my mother. No matter what, I'll make her find a way to get rid of him!"
Zhang Wenhao gave a cold, internal laugh. Get rid of him? He had nearly taken his life just now. This level of malice was enough to mark him as a mortal enemy. To let a mortal enemy go was like releasing a tiger back into the mountains.
"Ruoran," Zhang Wenhao said while comforting her. "Don't let Auntie Nie know about this."
"Why?" Su Ruoran asked, surprised.
"It's not appropriate," Zhang Wenhao said. "Your families have had a relationship for decades; it's not suitable for Auntie Nie to get involved."
"Who cares about that now!" Su Ruoran's tone turned cold. "I absolutely cannot let him hurt you. Even if it means the Su family and the Mo family become sworn enemies, I will get him away from us!"
Zhang Wenhao smiled slightly. "You're in my arms now. As long as I'm here, it's not time for you to act like a tough woman holding the fort alone. Trust me, this will end here. Mo Sinan wouldn't dare try this again so blatantly. After all, Jiangcheng isn't his home turf; he has to show some restraint."
It took a great deal of effort for Zhang Wenhao to convince Su Ruoran to temporarily abandon the idea of calling Nie Minhui. After comforting her, he discarded the mangled bicycle, picked up the Scirocco, dropped Su Ruoran off at home, and then drove home as fast as he could.
Meanwhile, Mo Sinan returned to his presidential suite at the Hilton, feeling incredibly frustrated.
Ever since he had been thoroughly beaten by Zhang Wenhao on Sunday, he had kept himself locked in this suite for the past two days. Having suffered such a defeat and humiliation in front of Su Ruoran, he couldn't swallow his pride. Back at the ring, he had sworn to make Zhang Wenhao pay for the insult with his life, but being in Jiangcheng, his capabilities were severely restricted, and he hadn't been able to come up with a concrete plan.
Today, he had finally steeled himself: he would handle Zhang Wenhao personally. His original plan was to wait near the bus stop, strike Zhang Wenhao down after he dropped off Su Ruoran, then abandon the car in a remote area and confess everything to his family. Even if his family scolded him, they would certainly step in to resolve the matter. At worst, he would be grounded in Yanjing for a while or sent abroad for two years. As long as he could vent his anger, it would all be worth it.
Mo Sinan had weighed the pros and cons. The Su family's status was slightly higher than his own, so he couldn't hurt Su Ruoran. But Zhang Wenhao was insignificant; he was just Su Ruoran's boyfriend. If he killed him, the Su family might come looking for an explanation, but they would never become mortal enemies with the Mo family. That was why he only struck once he was sure Su Ruoran was on the bus.
He had intended to finish Zhang Wenhao off today, but he hadn't expected Zhang Wenhao's reaction to be so quick. Despite the Ferrari's acceleration, he had managed to escape in the blink of an eye! It was infuriating!
Although the attempt failed, Mo Sinan felt no fear, only rage. It was just attempted murder; he could use his connections to smooth it over. So, after wrecking the bike, he went straight back to his suite, his mind consumed with how to get another chance, ensuring that next time, Zhang Wenhao would definitely die.
Zhang Wenhao arrived home and immediately went to his room to open his computer. To him, Mo Sinan was now on his kill list, though his threat was far smaller than that of the killer hunting him. He suppressed his rage and killing intent toward Mo Sinan, focusing all his energy on the assassin. He thought to himself: deal with him first, then find the right moment to quietly wipe that bastard Mo Sinan off the face of the earth!
Having learned the Internet Security skill, the first thing Zhang Wenhao did was log into the official website of the Jiangcheng Hilton to search for vulnerabilities.
Official hotel websites like the Hilton's were developed to standard specifications. Beyond browsing, they allowed for online booking, which meant there had to be a backend system for internal operations—tracking room availability, processing bookings, assigning rooms, and finalizing orders.
Through this medium, he could infiltrate the backend, and from there, take a step further to hack into the Hilton's surveillance system.
The security of the Hilton's website was as fragile as a sheet of paper to Zhang Wenhao. In less than five minutes, he successfully exploited a minor vulnerability to gain access to the backend. He immediately called up the hotel's check-in records.
Check-ins required scanning a second-generation ID card, recording the guest's identity and photo. Even if the killer used a fake ID, the photo would be his own. Zhang Wenhao just needed to find that face to know which room he was in.
The registry displayed guest information in rows, including photos, names, ID numbers, and room numbers. After flipping through two pages, he found the killer he had seen before on the first row of the third page!
"Qin Long." Zhang Wenhao sneered at the name under the photo. "Whether this is your real name or not, once you return to the Hilton, you're a dead man tonight!"
Just as he noted the room number and prepared to exit the backend to hack the surveillance system, his peripheral vision caught a familiar face on the screen.
Zhang Wenhao squinted, his eyes widening. Once he confirmed the identity, a cold smirk played on his lips. "Mo Sinan, congratulations. You have successfully been promoted to a mortal enemy!"
