Falling from a great height
On a winter afternoon, sunlight lazily spilled over every corner of the city, yet it could not dispel the chill that seeped deep into the bones. Gao Hua stood before the window of his apartment on the thirty-second floor, his gaze piercing through sparse clouds to the tiny world below. His mood mirrored the weather—gloomy and heavy.
Gao Hua was an architect, renowned for his unique designs of skyscrapers. Yet recently, his life had plunged into unprecedented turmoil. An important project had been forced to halt due to a broken chain of funding; the investors had vanished without a trace, leaving him alone to face claims from banks and workers. Worse still, his wife, Su Min—a gentle yet strong woman—had chosen this moment to ask for a divorce.
Su Min was a lawyer, her career flourishing. Unlike Gao Hua, she maintained an unwavering enthusiasm for life and hope for the future. Yet cracks in their marriage had grown into an unbridgeable chasm, pulling them further and further apart.
That day, Gao Hua received a call from Su Min, asking him to meet at the coffee shop they once loved. He knew this meeting would likely mark the definitive end of their marriage. With complex emotions, he changed into the suit Su Min had once praised, and set out for the café.
Inside, Su Min was already waiting by the window. She wore a simple yet elegant dress, a faint smile on her face, though it could not conceal the fatigue and resolve in her eyes.
"Gao Hua, you're here." Her voice was gentle but firm.
Gao Hua nodded, forcing a smile. "Yes, let's talk."
They sat in silence for a while before Su Min finally broke the ice. "Gao Hua, we need to face reality. Our marriage has reached its end. I think we should part on good terms."
His heart sank, but he tried to remain calm. "I understand, Su Min. I just hope we can find a solution that’s fair to us both."
Su Min sighed. "I've thought it through. We can divorce by agreement, and I'll do my best to be fair with the division of property."
Gao Hua nodded, bitterness welling inside. He knew that no matter how he tried to hold on, their marriage was beyond saving.
After discussing the details, they left the coffee shop as the sun was setting, streetlights flickering on and casting their shadows long.
Gao Hua walked home alone, his heart full of confusion and loss. He could not see the path ahead, nor imagine how to face the impending solitude.
Back in his apartment, he turned on every light, hoping the brightness would banish the darkness within him. Yet no matter how he tried, despair and helplessness surged like a tide, threatening to drown him.
Just then, his phone rang—a strange number. Gao Hua hesitated, but answered.
"Mr. Gao Hua? This is an investigator from the police. We've just received a report that your wife, Su Min, suffered a high-altitude fall in a downtown mall. Her condition is critical, and you need to come to the hospital immediately."
Gao Hua's heart clenched tight; he could scarcely believe his ears. Su Min... a fall from a height? How could that be?
Without another thought, he grabbed his coat and keys and rushed from his apartment. All the way, he prayed for Su Min's safety, but fear and anxiety pressed down like a giant stone, making it hard to breathe.
At the hospital, Su Min had already been taken into surgery. Outside the operating room, several police officers questioned him, his voice trembling as he recounted their meeting and the shock of receiving the call.
The officers recorded his statement, then told him he must wait for the outcome. Gao Hua sat on the bench outside the operating room, hands tightly clasped, eyes fixed on the door, afraid to miss any sign.
Time crawled by, each second feeling as long as a year. Finally, the door opened and the doctor emerged. Gao Hua rushed forward, anxiously asking about Su Min.
The doctor sighed and shook his head. "I'm sorry, Mr. Gao. We did everything we could, but Ms. Su did not survive."
Gao Hua's heart shattered instantly; he could hardly believe his ears. Su Min... dead? How was that possible? She was still so young, so full of life...
The police began to investigate the cause of the fall. They discovered Su Min had slipped from the edge of the mall's rooftop terrace. Though the railing met safety standards, a gap had inexplicably appeared, causing her to fall.
Yet as their investigation deepened, the police found puzzling details. First, as a lawyer, Su Min was highly alert to safety issues—she was unlikely to overlook such a gap. Second, surveillance footage showed a mysterious figure wandering the terrace edge before Su Min's arrival, seemingly searching for something. As Su Min appeared, the figure vanished.
These clues led the police to suspect that the fall was not an accident but a carefully planned murder. They began to investigate Su Min’s network, searching for the mysterious figure.
Gao Hua was plunged into agony and guilt. He could not accept Su Min’s sudden departure, nor imagine her terror and despair in her final moments. He began to recall every memory of her, hoping to find clues to help the police.
Just as Gao Hua was near despair, an unexpected discovery rekindled his hope. While sorting Su Min’s belongings, he found a diary. In it, Su Min had recorded her recent feelings and experiences. One entry mentioned a case she had recently taken on, involving a corrupt developer and a serious construction quality accident.
Gao Hua’s heart sank. He realized this case might be closely connected to Su Min’s death. He immediately informed the police and provided copies of the diary as evidence.
Following Gao Hua’s lead, the police began investigating the developer’s background and movements. They found Su Min had sued him over quality issues, causing him significant losses. The police suspected the developer, seeking revenge, may have orchestrated the fall.
After arduous investigation and pursuit, the police finally identified the suspect. The mysterious figure was a killer hired by the developer, who deliberately damaged the terrace railing while Su Min was distracted, causing her fatal fall.
When the police arrested the suspect, Gao Hua felt a measure of solace. Though Su Min was gone, at least her killer had received his due punishment.
Yet the case brought Gao Hua deep reflection. He began to realize that professional success could not compensate for the emptiness in his family and emotions. He reconsidered his lifestyle and values, seeking a more balanced and harmonious way of living.
In the days that followed, Gao Hua gradually emerged from the shadow and restarted his life. He continued his work in architecture, but focused more on safety and humanistic concern in his designs. He also tried to forge closer, more sincere relationships with those around him, cherishing every moment with family and friends.
Though Su Min was gone, her spirit and memory remained forever in Gao Hua’s heart. He believed that as long as they had truly loved each other, that love would shine like a lamp, illuminating his path forward.
After the sudden upheaval, Gao Hua’s life felt shuffled anew—everything both strange and familiar. He moved from his old apartment to a quieter place farther from the city center. There, a wide green field stretched out, mist swirling in the mornings and stars filling the night sky, offering him a measure of solace.
In his new home, Gao Hua arranged a small study, filled with books on architecture and art pieces he and Su Min had collected. On quiet nights, he would sit at his desk, leafing through familiar volumes, recalling moments spent with Su Min. These memories, though tinged with bitterness, made him cherish what they had all the more.
Professionally, Gao Hua did not falter because of his personal tragedy. Instead, he devoted himself even more to architectural design, treating every project as a tribute to Su Min. He began to integrate humanistic and safety concepts into each design, striving for spaces both beautiful and practical. His work gradually won industry recognition, earning awards in international competitions.
Yet success did not erase his inner pain. Gao Hua knew that no matter how brilliant his career, it could never fill the void left by Su Min. So he began participating in charitable activities, using his expertise and influence to design safer, more comfortable housing for those in need. Through this, he hoped Su Min’s spirit would live on, and his heart find some comfort.
Socially, Gao Hua also became more open and accepting. No longer shutting himself away, he actively connected with others, sharing stories and experiences. He discovered that everyone has their own story and values, interwoven to create this vibrant world.
As time passed, Gao Hua gradually stepped out of the gloom, rediscovering the joy and meaning of life. He learned to enjoy each moment, to cherish time with family and friends, to let go of past obsessions and embrace future possibilities.
One weekend afternoon, Gao Hua strolled alone along a park path. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, warming him gently. He paused, closed his eyes, and took a deep breath. The air was fragrant with flowers and grass, mingled with distant laughter of children. In that moment, he felt a peace and contentment unlike any before.
He knew he had emerged from the darkness, found his direction and meaning anew. He believed that in the days to come, no matter what difficulties or challenges arose, he would face them bravely. Because in his heart, a lamp would always shine upon his path—that was Su Min’s love and memory.
