“He didn’t show up? So he thought you were lying to him and that’s why he went after you?” I guessed aloud.

He shook his head. “It’s not just that. He’s wanted me dead for a long time.”

“Why?”

“I can’t say!” Even now, he refused to admit to what they’d done.

I let out a cold laugh. “Don’t think I’m unaware of what you all did on the black market. Even if you die, your ghost won’t escape punishment in the underworld. As for Chen Fei and Yang Minghui, the law in this world will catch up to them.”

“You know about us?” Fang Xiaolong looked at me in surprise.

“What do you think?”

He seemed to relax, and with a faint smile, he asked, “Will I end up in hell?”

“Of course. If you don’t go to hell, who will?” Tan Xiao replied.

“And what about them?” Fang Xiaolong asked.

“What do you want to happen to them?” I shot back.

“Of course I want them dead. Why should I be the one who pays for everything, ends up like this, while they keep living well?”

“They won’t be living well for long. They might soon join you down there,” I told him directly.

To my surprise, he grinned in satisfaction. “That’s good. Makes sense, really. With what we’ve done, the best outcome would be life in prison, but considering the murders they’re involved in, it’s definitely the death penalty.”

“Then tell me, what murders are they involved in?” Sensing his excitement, I seized the opportunity to press further.

“What’s the fun in just telling you? You can go check out the black market yourself,” Fang Xiaolong replied, looking as unrepentant as ever.

I was so angry I wanted to chant a curse and punch him to oblivion.

But visiting the black market might not be a bad idea. I didn’t know how to get there yet, so I asked, “Where is the black market?”

“There’s no fixed location. Usually, every Monday, the time and place for the twice-weekly market are announced. If there’s any change, they’ll notify in advance.”

“How do you find out the new location?” I pursued.

Seeing how eager I was to know, Fang Xiaolong decided to bargain. “If I tell you, will you make sure those two get the death penalty?”

“That’s not up to me, but I’ll do my best. People like you shouldn’t be allowed to live anyway,” I answered.

He still sneered, even after being injured by Gai Xifeng. He looked utterly fearless, like a dead pig unafraid of boiling water.

Honestly, people like him aren’t afraid of death when alive, nor of annihilation after death. They’re really hard to deal with.

“Fine. Since I’m dead, they shouldn’t get off easy either,” Fang Xiaolong growled from the back seat.

Well, that could help Lin Chuan solve the case faster. So I said, “Alright. If you don’t want them to get off easy, I can help.”

He looked at me, and after a few seconds, he said, “It’s in that bar we were just at. After you enter, head to the dance floor, then turn left into a corridor marked ‘No Admittance.’ Go in, straight ahead, then right—you’ll find a concealed door. That’s where the black market location is posted each week.”

“Is it guarded?” I asked after listening to his directions.

“Of course. And all the guards are experts. There’s also infrared surveillance. If you act suspiciously, or try to take photos with your phone, you’ll almost certainly never get out,” Fang Xiaolong continued.

That struck me as odd. “If you can see it with your own eyes, why try to sneak photos?”

“Someone actually did that once—posted the pictures online. The next day, they were assassinated.”

If they’re so afraid of exposure, why do such things in the first place? I couldn’t understand, but I signaled to Xiaoyuan to go check the place as Fang Xiaolong had described.

Xiaoyuan understood and vanished at once.

Seeing the little ghost disappear, Fang Xiaolong knew what was happening. “By the way, Officer, I forgot to mention— even if you find out where the next black market is, you won’t be able to get in.”

“Why not?”

“What do you think? You think they’ll let you in just because you know the address? You need a pass. Even black market merchants like me can’t get in without one,” Fang Xiaolong replied.

So the black market was heavily guarded. It wouldn’t be easy to get in. But since he’d told me all this, he probably knew how to get a pass.

I gave him a cold smile. “After all that, are you just telling me I can’t get in? Then what’s the point of this conversation?”

“Heh, you’re sharp, Officer. But if you’re thinking of cleaning out the whole black market, I advise you to give up. There are people inside you can’t afford to anger. Even the owner of this car has no power over them. So keep that in mind. And if you can’t get evidence, you’ll only make them more cautious, making it even harder to get in next time.” He smiled slyly. “Oh, and there’s a submarket called Ghost Market. I think you’d be interested.”

I smiled back, though I felt little joy. He was right—the black market couldn’t be taken down in one sweep, and there were people there even Lin Chuan and his whole department couldn’t touch. Destroying it completely was close to impossible.

But then again, I was just an underworld officer. I only needed to do what was within my power; why force myself to do more?

So I asked, “How do you get a pass?”

“Do you have a pen?” he replied.

I searched Lin Chuan’s car and couldn’t find one. “Just tell me. I’ll note it down on my phone.”

He then gave me a string of letters, like a website address.

“What’s that?”

“An encrypted website. You can’t access it on your phone, and don’t even try. Don’t use your own computer either. Don’t try to get in at all,” Fang Xiaolong said sternly.

I didn’t quite understand. “Then how do I get in?”

“Isn’t the owner of this car a cop? Let him handle it. He knows what to do.”

“Alright. Anything else? If not, maybe you should consider moving on,” I said.

“Not so fast. Don’t you want to know how to find Yang Minghui once you’re inside?”

I knew what he was up to. “Don’t waste my time. For all you know, Chen Fei’s already been caught.”

“Chen Fei? He’s just a tool for killing. The real boss is Rose. If you don’t arrest Rose, Chen Fei will get out sooner or later,” Fang Xiaolong said confidently.

“Why didn’t you say so earlier?” I glared at him.

He just grinned cheekily at me. “I thought you knew. Besides, you never asked, did you?”

I wanted to destroy him on the spot, but I forced myself to hold back, knowing Tan Xiao had to take him in. I quickly pulled out my phone and messaged Lin Chuan.

He replied almost immediately: “Your tip was right on time. We were just going to question her, but now we can take her in for interrogation.”

“You’ve already got her?” I texted back.

“Yes. I’ll tell you the details later,” he replied briefly.

At least they’d caught Rose. If she’d escaped, catching her later would be much harder.

But then Fang Xiaolong said, “Rose has someone backing her. If you don’t have evidence, she’ll get out, and if she’s released, you won’t be able to hold Chen Fei either.”

What kind of people are these? I cursed silently. But what did he mean by that?

Thinking it over, I grinned mischievously. “But there’s still you, isn’t there? You must have evidence of her crimes.”

“I don’t have evidence, but I know everything she’s done. And if Chen Fei tried to kill me, she definitely knew about it. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have dared,” Fang Xiaolong said, leaning back like a king.

“That works.” With that, I turned away, gazing ahead. Honestly, after hearing Fang Xiaolong’s words, I felt conflicted. The world is full of things I’m powerless to change.

People like them—as long as they have the right connections, even the worst crimes result in only the lightest punishments.

If I could, I’d destroy their souls and leave them as husks until their bodies died.

But that would violate the rules. Underworld officers aren’t allowed to harm living souls.

So I could only wait. Before long, I saw Lin Chuan’s colleagues escorting Chen Fei and Rose out of the bar.

But because of their raid, I was sure some other criminals inside had already slipped away.

“Xiaobei, we did well tonight. I wanted to treat you to a late-night meal in the county, but that’ll have to wait for another time,” Lin Chuan said when he returned to the car.

I nodded. I wasn’t in the mood for food anyway. “Sure, whenever you’re free.”

“Alright, let’s head back for now. Tomorrow I’ll bring you and your wife to stay in the county,” Lin Chuan said, starting the car.

But Xiaoyuan hadn’t returned yet, so I said, “Let’s wait a bit.”

He knew I must have a reason, so he just nodded and lit a cigarette.

He finished smoking, but Xiaoyuan still wasn’t back, so I sent Xiaofang to check.

But just as he was about to go, Xiaoyuan returned and said, “Sir, there’s a ghost hunter in the bar who’s not a good person. If I hadn’t hidden, he might have caught me.”

“A ghost hunter? Why’s he at the bar?” I asked in confusion.

Xiaoyuan didn’t answer, but Fang Xiaolong said, “Because that place really isn’t clean. And that ghost hunter is probably there to check out the black market location. If I’m right, his area is the black market’s submarket—the Ghost Market.”
