Chapter 22: An Ambush? Turning the Tables and Annihilating Them
Inside the supermarket, a middle-aged man brandished a fire axe, swinging it fiercely at Ye Feng.
Ye Feng, having anticipated the move, sidestepped with effortless grace, dodging the attack before delivering a swift kick. Though he held back his full strength, the force of the blow sent the man flying several meters away.
Thud!
The man crashed heavily to the ground, the fire axe slipping from his grasp. Ye Feng drew his flaming blade, his cold eyes fixed on the man who had attempted to ambush him.
"Ah! Ow, oh my..."
Dazed by the kick, the man lay on the floor, groaning incessantly. As Ye Feng approached, the man shook off his stupor, his eyes darting to the glowing, lethal blade in Ye Feng's hand, radiating a murderous aura. Terror seized him, and he scrambled to his knees, begging for mercy.
"Big brother, please, spare me!"
"I was blinded by greed!"
The man, middle-aged and sharp-featured, wept and wailed. Ye Feng raised his flaming sword, his voice filled with killing intent. "I didn't provoke you. Why did you try to ambush me?"
Pale-faced and trembling uncontrollably, the man stammered, "B-big brother, it's my fault!"
"I'm the owner of this supermarket. All the supplies here belong to me. I was afraid you had come to rob me..."
"This supermarket belongs to you?" Ye Feng's eyes flickered.
"Yes, it's mine, it's mine!" the man quickly replied.
Ye Feng pondered this. In reality, the man was lying. He was merely a customer, not the owner. When the apocalypse struck, only the man and a female clerk were in the store. Luckily, neither had turned into a zombie. Relying on the supermarket's supplies, they had no need to worry about food. However, a disagreement eventually broke out between them. The clerk wanted to help other survivors, but the man vehemently opposed it, cursing her as a "saint." He eventually ambushed the clerk, tied her up, and cruelly murdered her to claim the supermarket for himself.
Ye Feng, of course, was unaware of this.
The man kept kneeling and pleading. "This is my supermarket. I was afraid you'd take my supplies, which is why I was blinded by greed and attacked you! Please forgive me!"
Ye Feng chuckled lightly. "I see. So, all the supplies in this supermarket are yours, then?"
"No, no, no! I am willing to give this supermarket to you! From this moment on, you are the owner!" the man said with a sycophantic expression.
Ye Feng rubbed his chin, seemingly hesitant. Seeing this, the man gritted his teeth and knelt down to kowtow. "I am willing to be your subordinate, to be your dog—please, just forgive me!"
After a moment of contemplation, Ye Feng spoke, "In that case, I will spare you..."
The man’s face instantly lit up with wild joy.
"...sparing you is impossible!" Ye Feng’s tone shifted, a mocking smile playing on his lips.
"Huh?" The man's smile froze on his face.
Ye Feng stared at the man, and at the red aura of malice radiating from him. "I'll make it quick for you," he said calmly.
A chill ran through the man's entire body, as if he had fallen into an icy cellar. "No, no… please, spare my life!"
Ye Feng remained cold and unmoved.
"No! No! I'll fight you to the death!"
With a ferocious expression, the man charged at Ye Feng with his fists raised. Ye Feng flicked his finger, and a flash of lightning surged forward.
Boom!
The man’s body suddenly stiffened, his eyes wide with terror. A moment later, his form shattered, dissolving into nothingness as dust.
"Flexible when needed, ruthless when acting," Ye Feng mused. "Too bad... you ran into me."
Ye Feng began to collect the supplies. There were still plenty of goods left in the supermarket; even after what the man had consumed, it far exceeded the previous convenience stores. Mineral water, biscuits, instant noodles, canned goods—he stored everything into his spatial storage.
Stepping out of the supermarket, Ye Feng continued on his way. He kept searching as he went. Gas station? All types of gasoline and diesel, packed away! Ice cream shop? Taken! Cafe? Stripped clean! Spice shop? Emptied out! Hardware stores, lingerie shops, milk tea shops, hotpot restaurants—he cleared them all, even taking the tables!
Ye Feng was in high spirits as he engaged in his massive looting spree. After a while, he slowed down. Storing items required mental energy, and he was beginning to feel exhausted. Furthermore, there were simply too many small shops in the city. Searching them one by one was a waste of time. Ye Feng was no longer satisfied with such petty gains.
"Forget the small targets along the way; I should head to the big supermarket first."
He quickly made up his mind. However, running there on foot would be too foolish. Driving was also out of the question—he was in the heart of the bustling city, where the roads were choked with zombies and abandoned vehicles. Many routes were completely blocked.
But just because driving a car was inconvenient didn't mean other transportation couldn't be used. Ye Feng moved along, scanning his surroundings, until his eyes lit up. By the side of the road lay an electric scooter that appeared to be in good condition.
"This is perfect! Just what I need."
He walked over and found the keys still hanging from the ignition. He righted the scooter and started it; everything worked perfectly, and the battery was still well-charged. Ye Feng nodded in satisfaction, hopped on, and began humming a tune as he sped forward.
"Riding my beloved little scooter... I never get stuck in traffic..."
Ye Feng didn't slow down, weaving through the dense clusters of cars and zombies. He moved in S-curves and Z-patterns, occasionally honking the horn—beep, beep! The zombies, unable to detect him, wandered around like headless flies, their massive heads filled with deep confusion.
Ye Feng’s reckless behavior went unnoticed by the zombies, but humans could see him clearly. Many survivors witnessed his antics and were left in utter shock.
"Damn! How is he doing that? Why aren't the zombies attacking him?"
"Unfair! This is bullshit! I sneak downstairs and the zombies roar at me just for passing gas!"
"Yeah, how is he so arrogant?"
"Exactly, riding a little scooter and honking the horn—hey, zombies, are you just going to let him get away with that?"
Some even recorded videos and posted them on the city forum, sparking immediate and heated discussion.
"What the hell, this is against the laws of nature!"
"Yeah! It makes no sense!"
"To the person above, the apocalypse is here and people have superpowers—you're still trying to talk about science?"
"He's a god-tier player. As an esper, I have to walk on eggshells around zombies. If I get caught in a swarm, I'm done for!"
"Is it possible he's an esper too, but his ability isn't for combat? Maybe it's some kind of stealth skill..."
"Damn! That's very likely!"
While the internet buzzed with debate, Ye Feng continued his journey at full speed. In truth, many survivors had begged him for help along the way, but he ignored them all. As the saying goes, "Sweep the snow from your own doorstep, and don't worry about the frost on your neighbor's roof."
Just as Ye Feng was cruising along on his electric scooter, a glimmer of hope ignited in a small room on the fourth floor of a building by the street.
The girl inside was Li Yueqi, a minor internet celebrity. Since the apocalypse, she had been hiding in her room, but her food was running out, and she had to consider her next move. By coincidence, she had just been browsing the city forum and saw the video of Ye Feng. As she was feeling frustrated, she turned around and saw Ye Feng riding his scooter right toward her building.
Li Yueqi was ecstatic. "He must be one of those legendary espers!"
"Even if his ability isn't for combat, it's a bit weak... but having the power to be invisible to zombies isn't bad at all!"
"Maybe he can protect me... at the very least, he can provide food!"
"He's the perfect choice for a temporary boyfriend!"
With that thought, Li Yueqi rushed to the window, emphasizing her bust as she shouted anxiously, "Brother! Handsome brother... can you save me?"
"If you save me, I'll consider being your girlfriend."
