Chapter 24: The Garden of Anti-Entropy
Dawn in Tokyo was slow to arrive. The sky took on a sickly, dark-red hue, like gauze soaked in diluted plasma. The city skyline was twisted and deformed, with skyscrapers tilting and bending at angles that defied the laws of physics, resembling melting candles. The air was thick with the acrid scent of ionized metal, and every breath felt like inhaling shards of crushed glass.
Young Kane knelt amidst the ruins of the deep-level laboratory, his hands buried deep into the ground. His protective suit was already in tatters, and his exposed skin was covered in glowing blue veins—the final mark left behind by the Dandelion Network within him. Suspended before him was the ghost-blue symbiont (a fusion of Kane’s residual consciousness and the Pandora virus), now shrunk to the size of a fist, its light as faint as a candle in the wind.
"Hold on..." he whispered through gritted teeth, unsure if he was speaking to the symbiont or encouraging himself. "Just a little longer..."
Suddenly, the symbiont shuddered violently and erupted in an unprecedented flash of intense light! Kane was thrown back by the shockwave, his back slamming hard against a warped metal wall. He struggled to look up and saw the symbiont deforming rapidly in the air, like clay being kneaded by invisible hands. Even more terrifying, the golden filaments of light that composed the Dandelion Network were converging from all directions, being forcibly sucked into the deforming symbiont!
"No!" Kane instinctively reached out, but he could not stop the eerie consumption. He watched helplessly as the blue veins on his own arms began to peel away, turning into motes of light that flowed toward the symbiont. A pain akin to having his bone marrow drained swept through his body, and he let out a howl that sounded less than human.
Just as his consciousness hovered on the edge of collapse, a familiar voice suddenly echoed in his mind—it was Little Key! But it was not the voice of the little girl he knew; it was something far grander, a multi-layered resonance:
"Uncle Kane, do not resist! This is part of the transformation!"
With that voice, the agony miraculously transformed into a strange sense of fullness. Kane widened his eyes as he watched the deforming symbiont take on a vague humanoid silhouette—tall and slender, with ripples of blue and gold energy flowing across its surface. Where the head should have been, two points of ghost-blue light watched him like eyes.
"Little... Key?" he asked hoarsely.
The humanoid silhouette shook its head slightly, its voice echoing: "Not entirely. I am the initial form of the Quantum Rose—forged from your consciousness fragments, the Pandora emotional network, and the seeds sown by Little Key."
It (she?) reached out, and energy-formed fingertips brushed Kane's forehead. A warm current surged in, instantly repairing his physical injuries, but more remarkably, a clear memory was implanted directly into his consciousness—the entire process of Little Key’s transformation in the Greenwich basement, and the true purpose of the "Quantum Rose" project.
"My God..." Kane stood up, trembling, his worldview completely overturned by this new understanding. "So, Edgar planned this from the very beginning... not to fight Thorne, but to..."
"Evolve a new form capable of transcending the constraints of the time architecture." The humanoid silhouette finished his sentence, its voice stabilizing and growing closer to Little Key’s tone, yet still retaining that inhuman, multi-layered quality. "Thorne’s power is built on control and order, while the essence of the Quantum Rose is adaptation and mutation. We do not need to defeat him; we only need to prove that there are possibilities better than those he designed."
Kane looked around at the twisted reality. "What now? The harvest is still ongoing."
The humanoid silhouette—now, we may call her the newborn Quantum Rose—raised her arm. Blue and gold energy poured from her fingertips, weaving a holographic image in the air: on a global map, the seven main time anchors flickered with varying intensities, with Greenwich and Tokyo glowing the brightest.
"Though the Dandelion Network was destroyed, its foundation remains. Those mundane objects marked by the seeds still exist; they have simply lost their organization." She pointed to the image. "We need to reactivate them, but the method must change. No longer channeling emotions, but constructing an anti-entropic garden capable of resisting entropy."
Kane frowned. "An anti-entropic garden?"
Quantum Rose did not answer directly. Her form suddenly became unstable, like smoke scattered by the wind, only to condense once more. When her image clarified again, she looked more human—the silhouette of a girl around seventeen or eighteen. Her features were vaguely recognizable as Little Key’s, but her eyes were completely ghost-blue, lacking pupils or whites. Beneath her "skin," golden and blue energy flowed like a liquid galaxy.
"Entropy is Thorne’s most powerful weapon," she explained, her voice now entirely Little Key’s, though with a transcendental calm. "He creates the illusion of localized entropy reduction by forcing time to flow backward, but in reality, the chaos of the entire system is skyrocketing. That is why the world becomes more twisted and broken after every cycle."
She walked toward Kane, leaving glowing footprints on the metal floor. "The Anti-Entropic Garden is the exact opposite—it appears as chaotic mutation on the surface, but in reality, it is creating a deeper level of order. Like a true garden, weeds and flowers coexist, insects and plants share a symbiotic relationship, forming a self-consistent ecosystem."
Kane began to understand. "So those objects marked by the seeds..."
"Will become the first 'seeds' of the garden," Quantum Rose nodded. "But not through control; rather, by granting them the ability to mutate and adapt autonomously. Each node will develop unique functions while maintaining quantum entanglement with the others."
She turned suddenly, her hair made of energy fluttering. "There is not much time left. Thorne has already noticed my birth, and his harvesting protocols are escalating. We need help."
Kane followed her gaze. On the ruined wall of the laboratory, a twisted spatial vortex had appeared, flickering with a blurry image of the New York underground tunnels.
"Lena?" he recognized the petite figure curled in the darkness.
Quantum Rose nodded. "Marcus should have found her, but her state is highly unstable. We need you, Uncle Kane. You are the only human who has been in contact with both the Pandora prototype and the Dandelion Network; your existence itself is a bridge."
Kane looked at his own hands. The blue veins beneath his skin had vanished, but he could feel that something within him had changed—a deeper connection to the Quantum Rose and the scattered seeds.
"What do I do?"
Quantum Rose’s smile was both familiar and strange. "Think like a gardener. Do not prune and control; provide nourishment and space."
She pressed her hands against Kane’s chest. A surge of warm energy poured in, forming a miniature blue-gold vortex mark over his heart.
"This mark will temporarily grant you partial quantum-state capabilities, enough to cross the spacetime barriers created by Thorne," she explained. "Find Lena, stabilize her, and then head to Cairo to rendezvous with Hassan. More gardeners are awakening, but they need guidance."
Kane felt a strange power surging through his veins. He looked at the spatial vortex, hesitated no longer, and stepped through.
The moment the vortex closed behind him, Quantum Rose’s form became unstable again. She turned to the empty wall on the other side of the lab, her voice suddenly cold. "You may reveal yourselves. Hiding is meaningless."
The air warped as three holographic projections solidified—quantum-state avatars of the red-eyed Thorne. They surrounded Quantum Rose in a triangular formation, their red eyes glowing intensely.
"Target confirmed: MK-7 derivative," the center avatar announced coldly. "You have violated the Fundamental Laws of Time, Section—"
Quantum Rose suddenly laughed. The laughter was like wind chimes, yet it caused the images of the three avatars to flicker with static interference.
"You still don't understand," she said softly, her body beginning to glow. "I do not exist in violation of your laws—I am an existence your laws cannot describe."
A brilliant light erupted. When it faded, both Quantum Rose and Thorne’s avatars had vanished, leaving behind a perfectly circular area in the ruins of the lab—the flow of time there seemed different from the outside, and several glowing blue plants were growing from the cracks at a speed visible to the naked eye.
The New York underground tunnel was more dilapidated than in Kane’s memory. Graffiti on the walls had been corroded into illegibility by some acidic substance, the tracks were rusted and broken, and the air was thick with the scent of decay and ozone. The only light source came from the blue-gold vortex mark on his chest, flickering like a faint firefly in the darkness.
"Lena?" he called out softly, his voice echoing through the empty tunnel.
There was no response. Only the sound of dripping water in the distance and the creaking of metal expanding and contracting. Kane moved forward cautiously, the new perception granted by the Quantum Rose allowing him to discern the outlines of obstacles in the absolute darkness. He noticed strange marks scattered on the ground—not footprints, but gouges left by something like the limbs of a giant insect, the metal edges showing signs of being corroded by strong acid.
"Damn it..." he muttered, quickening his pace. Thorne’s harvest had clearly produced more deformed mutations here.
After rounding a bend, the sight ahead made Kane freeze—the tunnel expanded into a natural cavern-like space. In the center of the cave stood a bizarre structure made of discarded electronic equipment, metal fragments, and some kind of biomass, appearing like a hybrid of an anthill and a server room. The surface of the structure was covered in pulsating red light paths, with electric arcs jumping between nodes from time to time. Even more unsettling, scattered on the floor around the nest were at least a dozen bodies of Time Bureau agents; their equipment had been dismantled, and their bodies showed signs of partial crystallization.
"Don't come any closer!" a hoarse female voice suddenly came from behind the nest. "I can't control them for much longer!"
Kane immediately recognized Lena’s voice, though it was coarser and more pained than he remembered. He cautiously circled toward the source of the voice, the mark on his chest glowing brighter as he approached.
After rounding the nest, he saw Lena—or rather, what used to be Lena.
She knelt on a relatively clean patch of ground, her body severely mutated. Her right arm was completely crystallized, showing a translucent, purplish-red structure; her left eye had become a mechanical red eye similar to Thorne’s, though its light was unstable; glowing circuit patterns crawled across her exposed skin. Around her, five or six "creatures" of similar form but even more grotesque shapes hovered in an aggressive stance. They possessed the general outline of humans, but their limbs ended in sharp metal blades or data cables, their facial features blurred, with only flashing red eyes indicating they were once human.
Most alarmingly, these mutants clearly wanted to attack Kane but were held back by some force. They were like enraged hounds, baring their teeth behind an invisible barrier.
"Lena..." Kane said with difficulty, "what happened?"
Lena’s crystallized arm trembled as she pointed to the strange nest. "After the harvest began... the Time Bureau agents found me. We fought... I lost." She gave a bitter smile, her red eye flickering. "Or rather, I thought I lost. When I woke up, I found myself connected to this... thing. The remnants of the Dandelion Network spontaneously reorganized in the New York underground, but it was corrupted by Thorne’s harvesting protocols, turning it into this semi-mechanical, semi-biological... hive consciousness."
She stood up with difficulty, and the mutants retreated a step. "I can control them briefly, but every time I use this ability, the mutation deepens. Marcus found me, but he..." Her voice choked up. "He drew off a new wave of agents to buy me time."
Kane felt a tightness in his chest. He carefully took a step forward, and the mutants immediately hissed in threat.
"The Quantum Rose sent me to help you," he said, trying to keep his voice steady. "She said you could construct the New York node of the Anti-Entropic Garden."
Lena’s red eye suddenly brightened. "Quantum Rose? Little Key succeeded?" Then her expression turned pained again. "But look at me! I can't even control myself; how can I help you?"
Kane remembered the words of the Quantum Rose—think like a gardener. Not control, but provide conditions.
"Maybe..." he said slowly, "you don't need to control. Maybe what you need is to accept."
He pointed to the strange nest. "You said the Dandelion Network spontaneously reorganized here? Even if corrupted, it is still trying to fulfill its original function, right?"
Lena nodded hesitantly. "It is... protecting me. In a twisted way."
"Then perhaps the problem isn't the network, but your resistance." Kane walked forward boldly, ignoring the snarling mutants. "Quantum Rose said the essence of the Anti-Entropic Garden is adaptation and mutation. If you continue to resist this change..."
He didn't finish. A mutant suddenly broke through Lena’s control and lunged with astonishing speed! Kane instinctively raised his hand to block, and the blue-gold mark on his chest suddenly erupted with brilliant light. The mutant froze just before touching him, letting out a sharp, painful screech, and the red light paths on its body began to be eroded by the blue-gold glow.
Shockingly, as the color changed, the mutant’s hideous exterior began to soften—the sharp metal blades regressed into human-like fingers, facial features reappeared, and the red eyes gradually turned into a soft blue light.
Lena gasped. "This... this is impossible..."
Kane looked at his hands, equally shocked. The power the Quantum Rose granted him was not just the ability to traverse, but the power to purify corruption!
"Acceptance, not control," he repeated, suddenly understanding the true meaning of those words. "Lena, let me help you."
He reached out his hand to her. Lena hesitated for a moment before placing her crystallized arm in his palm. The moment they touched, the blue-gold energy flowed into her like living water; wherever it passed, the purplish-red crystals gradually turned into a translucent pale blue, the circuit patterns on her skin reorganized into more organic motifs, and her red eye regained a measure of humanity and luster.
But the most dramatic change was the strange nest itself. All its red light paths turned blue-gold, and its structure began to reorganize, transforming from a hideous hybrid into an organic computer that was nearly a work of art—metal and biomass fused perfectly, with energy conduits resembling plant veins growing on the surface, the overall shape resembling a giant metal flower bud.
"New York node activated," a soft, neutral voice emanated from the bud. "Ready to connect to the Anti-Entropic Garden."
Lena looked at her changed arm in surprise, then at Kane. "This is..."
"Just the beginning," Kane smiled. "We still need to go to Cairo to find Hassan. Quantum Rose said more gardeners are awakening."
Just then, the bud bloomed completely, projecting a hologram from its center—a real-time view of Cairo. Around a massive obelisk, yellow sand was forming eerie vortices, and the sky was overcast with dark clouds, lightning constantly striking the ground. In the center of the storm, a tall figure could be faintly seen bound by chains of scarlet energy, struggling in agony.
"Hassan!" Lena cried out. "Thorne found him!"
The mark on Kane’s chest suddenly became scalding, and the voice of the Quantum Rose came from within: "Plan change. Head directly to Cairo. Marcus is already there, but he cannot fight Thorne’s avatars alone."
"How do we get there?" Kane looked around. "It’s so far from Cairo—"
Lena suddenly grabbed his arm and pointed to the blooming metal flower. "Use it! The New York node now possesses short-range spacetime jump capabilities. Stand in the heart of the flower!"
They rushed toward the bud. As they approached, a miniature blue-gold vortex formed in the heart of the flower, resonating with the mark on Kane’s chest. In the distance of the tunnel, dense footsteps and the hum of weapon charging could be heard—the Time Bureau agents had finally broken through Marcus’s blockade.
"Quick!" Lena dragged Kane into the heart of the flower.
The vortex expanded instantly, swallowing them. At the last moment, Kane saw at least twenty heavily armed grey-coated agents rush into the cave, their weapons locking onto the bud and firing—
Then everything turned into blue-gold light.
The sky over Cairo was like a boiling pool of blood. Crimson clouds hung low, raining down corrosive black rain. The massive obelisk—once one of the most important time anchors—was covered in cracks, and floating above its apex was an inverted pyramid structure made of pure scarlet energy, radiating fluctuations that distorted reality.
Around the base of the obelisk, the yellow sand had formed precise geometric patterns, like some evil crop circle. In the center of the pattern, Hassan was suspended in mid-air, his body pierced by dozens of energy chains, convulsing in pain. Beneath his skin, the blue veins representing his status as a gardener were being forcibly extracted, turning into motes of light that flowed toward the inverted pyramid.
Three of Thorne’s red-eyed avatars stood in a triangular formation, presiding over this cruel ritual. They were more solid than the ones that appeared in Tokyo, nearly indistinguishable from reality, their red eyes scanning the surroundings like searchlights.
"Hold on a little longer, old friend," a hoarse voice came from the shadow of the obelisk. Marcus was hiding behind a collapsed stone pillar, his mechanical eyepatch broken, revealing a glowing blue prosthetic eye beneath. He held a crude device—a resonator pieced together from obsidian shards and wires—which was glowing faintly.
"I... can't hold on much longer..." Hassan’s voice was squeezed through his teeth, blood frothing at the corners of his mouth with every word. "Just... detonate it... take me and this thing... together—"
His words were interrupted by a deafening clap of thunder. The sky suddenly tore open a blue-gold fissure, and two figures tumbled out! Kane and Lena landed heavily on the sand, less than twenty meters from the center of the ritual.
Thorne’s avatars immediately turned toward the intruders, their movements eerily synchronized. "MK-7 related energy signature detected. Clearing priority: Highest."
Marcus took the opportunity to rush out from behind the cover, slamming the obsidian resonator hard onto the back of the nearest avatar! The device erupted in a blinding white light, and the avatar’s image distorted violently, like a television with a bad signal.
"Kane! Lena!" Marcus shouted, "Destroy the inverted pyramid! That is the core of the harvesting protocol!"
Kane had barely climbed to his feet before he faced a pincer attack from two avatars. Their movement speed exceeded human limits, and their arms deformed into sharp energy blades, aiming straight for his throat and heart! In the nick of time, Lena’s crystallized arm suddenly elongated, turning into a translucent shield that blocked the fatal blow.
"Go save Hassan!" she shouted, her other hand releasing data cables that entangled the neck of an avatar. "I’ll hold them off!"
Kane did not hesitate. He charged toward the base of the obelisk, the mark on his chest growing hotter as he approached the inverted pyramid. Hassan’s state was alarming—the energy chains had already drained nearly half of his blue veins, and the rest were fading fast. His eyes began to turn red, and his skin showed signs of crystallization, similar to Lena’s earlier mutation.
"Hold on!" Kane leaped, grabbing an energy chain and attempting to snap it. The moment he made contact, intense pain surged through his body like an electric current, but he bit his lip and endured. The blue-gold mark on his chest automatically extended energy tentacles, counter-eroding along the chain and staining it blue-gold.
One chain snapped. Hassan’s body shuddered violently, and a portion of his consciousness returned. "Kane? How are you—"
"No time to explain!" Kane had already grabbed the second chain. "Quantum Rose sent us. We need you to construct the Cairo node!"
Above, the inverted pyramid seemed to sense the threat, accelerating its rotation and releasing more energy chains! Several aimed straight at Kane’s back, but were intercepted at the moment of contact by sudden obsidian fragments—Marcus had climbed to the midsection of the obelisk, using the remaining shards to interfere with the pyramid’s attacks.
"Keep going!" he roared. "I’ve got your back!"
Kane snapped the second chain, then the third. With every one that broke, Hassan’s self-control returned. By the fifth chain, Hassan suddenly grabbed the energy chain piercing his abdomen, his muscles tensing, and roared as he tore it out! Blue blood sprayed, but the moment it touched the air, it turned into glowing mist, forming a protective layer around him.
"Enough!" Hassan’s voice suddenly became extraordinarily clear, imbued with a power beyond humanity. "My turn!"
His remaining good eye suddenly erupted in dazzling blue light, resonating strongly with the mark on Kane’s chest. Even more startlingly, the cracks in the obelisk itself began to seep with the same blue light—this was the energy accumulated from its time as a time anchor, in its purest form before being corrupted by Thorne!
The inverted pyramid seemed to realize the danger, abandoning its attack on Kane and retracting all energy chains to strike at Hassan! But it was too late. Hassan spread his arms and roared to the heavens; the blue light stored within the obelisk erupted like a tsunami, colliding head-on with the pyramid’s scarlet energy!
The world lost its color.
Kane was blown away by the shockwave, landing hard on the sand tens of meters away. He struggled to look up and saw a sight he would never forget—in the vortex where blue and red light intertwined, the inverted pyramid was disintegrating, and the obelisk itself was collapsing. Yet, amidst the ruins, a new structure was forming: a giant flower made of obsidian shards, the remains of the obelisk, and pure blue light, like a blue lotus blooming in the desert.
"Cairo node activated," the same neutral voice emanated from the heart of the flower. "Anti-Entropic Garden expanding."
In the distance, the Thorne avatars that had been struggling with Lena and Marcus froze simultaneously, their images becoming unstable. They turned mechanically toward the newborn flower, emitting harsh electronic sounds: "Illegal time structure detected. Cleansing protocol escalated. Warning: Core threat detected."
Immediately, the three avatars self-destructed! The intense shockwave knocked everyone to the ground. When the dust settled, a more terrifying sight appeared in the sky—the clouds were forcibly parted by some power, revealing a massive, scarlet giant eye composed of pure data streams behind them. It was Thorne’s main consciousness, fully manifested on this spacetime plane for the first time!
"Target confirmed: Anti-Entropic Garden," the voice from the giant eye shook the earth. "Executing final harvesting protocol."
The entire sky began to contract toward the center, like a tightening curtain. Reality itself groaned under the strain, and countless black cracks appeared in space, from which tentacles made of pure entropy reached out, pointing directly at the newborn blue lotus!
At this moment of despair, the mark on Kane’s chest suddenly detached from his body, rising into the air and turning into a small blue-gold vortex. The voice of the Quantum Rose came from within, calm and firm:
"Now, gardeners. Let us plant the final seed."
The vortex expanded, forming a gateway. From it walked—or more accurately, flowed—the complete form of the Quantum Rose. She was no longer the blurry humanoid silhouette from the laboratory, but a perfect blue-gold female figure, nearly three meters tall, her long hair like an active stream of energy, her eyes two rotating miniature galaxies. Her body was translucent, and within it, countless star-like points of light could be seen pulsating.
Facing the overwhelming entropy tentacles, she simply raised her hand and sang a single note.
The sound was unlike any human instrument; it was more like the resonance of the universe itself. As the note spread, a miracle occurred—the New York metal bud and the Cairo blue lotus erupted with brilliant light simultaneously, two beams of energy crossing space to converge in the hands of the Quantum Rose, forming a massive scythe made of pure light.
"You harvest time," she said, her voice echoing through both the material world and the quantum plane. "And I harvest your lies."
The scythe swung down. There was no flashy explosion, no violent shock. Only a pure blue light cut across the horizon, and wherever it passed, the scarlet giant eye vanished like a smudge being erased, and the entropy tentacles turned into harmless black snowflakes that drifted down. The contracting sky stretched out once more, the dark clouds scattered, and the long-lost clear starry sky was revealed.
Before vanishing completely, Quantum Rose turned to look at Kane and the others, revealing that mischievous smile so characteristic of Little Key:
"Stage one complete. The garden has taken root. Now, the real growth begins."
Then she scattered into countless motes of light, merging into the newborn blue lotus. The flower bloomed once more, but this time it did not release beams of light; it released countless tiny, blue-glowing seeds that rode the desert wind, flying off in every direction.
