Chapter 6: Whispers Beneath the Rust-Red Gears
The searing heat of the walls penetrated his protective suit, causing sharp, stinging pain. The air was thick with the acrid stench of molten metal, radioactive dust, and scorched, residual spores. Kane leaned his back against the blistering wall of the ruined apartment building, gasping for air. Every inhalation felt like swallowing shards of glass; his lungs burned with agony. Greenwich Village had been reduced to a scorched, molten pool; not even ash remained of the newsstand that had once stood there.
He opened his hand. In his left palm lay the cold, nondescript old brass key, emitting a faint metallic luster in the dim light. In his right was the newspaper he had snatched from the edge of hell, its edges charred and curled, so fragile it seemed it would disintegrate into dust at the slightest touch. The photograph on the front page—a younger Dr. Kane Aldrin shaking hands with Advisor Thorne—burned his retinas like a red-hot iron.
"Chief Researcher... Kane Aldrin..." The hoarse voice squeezed out from his cracked lips, heavy with the metallic taste of blood and a profound sense of self-loathing. Absurdity coiled around his heart like cold vines, tightening with every breath. He was not a victim; he was a conspirator! He was one of the architects of this Mobius hell that consumed itself in an endless cycle of billions!
"Heh... heheh..." A suppressed, rattling laugh rolled in his chest, eventually collapsing into a fit of hacking, agonizing coughs. Frothy blood congealed inside his protective mask.
Anger? Yes. But that momentary surge of rage, faced with such immense, frigid absurdity, was like a snowflake falling into a volcano—vanishing instantly, leaving behind only a bone-deep exhaustion and a cold, piercing clarity. Self-destruction would solve nothing. The scarlet "70:22:30:11" on his pocket watch hung over him like a sword of Damocles. He had to act, if only for atonement, to end this nightmare he had brought into being with his own hands.
The key! The final guidance left by the aged Kane! Did it point to London? Cairo? Or the Time Bureau itself?
Kane’s gaze refocused on the brass key in his left hand. Its design was plain, devoid of any markings, lacking even the notches of a physical key. It didn't look like it could open any conventional lock. What was it then? A token? A coordinate transmitter? Or perhaps a "wrench" designed to trigger some intangible mechanism?
He attempted to focus his mind, to "touch" the key with his will. Nothing. It remained cold, silent, and dead.
The newspaper... He carefully unfolded the scorched, brittle sheet, avoiding the photograph, and scanned the surviving fragments of text below. Most of the content had been obliterated by grime and intense heat, leaving only sporadic remnants clinging to the charred edges:
"...Codename 'Ouroboros', aiming for controlled spacetime resets... to eliminate the risk of temporal entropy increase..."
"...Advisor Thorne emphasizes the 'necessity' and 'safety' of the project..."
"...Dr. Aldrin's team is responsible for the screening of the core 'vessel' and the stability of the 'closed loop'..."
"...Initial experimental data is optimistic, but the Ethics Committee has raised strong objections regarding the definition of a 'controlled apocalypse'..."
"...This newspaper will continue to follow..." (The rest is missing.)
"Vessel screening... closed loop stability..." Kane chewed on these words, the chill in his heart deepening. Was he the "perfect vessel" that had been "screened"? Had the older Kane passed down the key through billions of cycles, hoping he would break this "stability"?
The clues seemed to point to London. The whispers of the aged Kane before he dissipated had mentioned the "key," while the journal fragment found in Cairo pointed toward the "Initial Ring." But London... what was the connection to the mission marked in the Time Bureau’s data as the "Rusted Dome"?
Kane closed his eyes, forcing himself to recall the environmental data fragments of the London mission. A rusted-red sky, the omnipresent, slow-rotating phantoms of massive, corroded gears, the air heavy with the scent of rust and ozone... The Core Control Tower! The journal had mentioned the Core Control Tower! The place where the mastermind (another aged version of himself?) known as "Sir Evans" had last appeared!
Perhaps... the triggering of the key required a specific environment? A place saturated with the power of "rust"?
The countdown on his pocket watch allowed no hesitation. 70:22:15:48. Every jump burned away his life.
He hesitated no longer. His right hand tightened around the pocket watch, the cold metal edges digging into his palm, while his left hand gripped the brass key. He sank his consciousness into the watch, targeting the coordinates: London, the "Rusted Dome" disaster site, the Core Control Tower sector!
Darkness, tearing, falling.
When he opened his eyes again, the world had become a rusted purgatory.
The sky was a frozen, oppressive rust-red, like a massive, oxidized copper lid clamped over the world. The air was thick with the heavy tang of iron and the sharp, stinging scent of ozone; every breath felt as if his lungs were being filled with iron filings. Everywhere he looked, massive, translucent phantoms of rusted metal gears rotated slowly. Some were embedded in collapsed skyscrapers, others hung suspended in mid-air, emitting a low, teeth-grinding "creak... creak..." as if the bearings of the entire world were grinding toward destruction. The ground was covered in a thick, slick layer of rust-red dust that crunched underfoot.
London. Beneath the Rusted Dome.
Kane stood upon the wreckage of a massive, tilted steel bridge. The structure was scarred with rust, its huge metal components twisted and deformed, riddled with honeycomb-like corrosion holes. Below the bridge, where the Thames should have flowed, ran a viscous, rust-red liquid that emitted a foul, metallic stench. In the distance, a towering spire, its surface covered in crawling patches of rust, pierced the red fog—the London Core Control Tower! His target.
He looked down at his left hand. The brass key remained cold, unresponsive.
"Does it need to be closer... or in a specific position?" Kane muttered to himself. Enduring the irritation of metallic particles on his respiratory tract, he trudged through the slick rust-dust, moving toward the control tower. The massive gear phantoms rotated slowly overhead, casting ominous shadows.
The closer he got to the tower, the harsher the environment became. The concentration of rust-red particles in the air increased, forming a thin mist. The omnipresent grinding sound became more piercing, as if countless rusted blades were scraping against his eardrums. The rust-dust on the ground grew thicker, nearly submerging his ankles, making every step an arduous struggle.
Finally, he arrived at the base of the tower. It resembled a colossal, iron stump covered in red rust, its surface riddled with large pipes and valves, most of which were sealed by corrosion or twisted and broken. A massive, heavy, verdigris-covered metal door was embedded in the tower base; it was shut tight, its hinges entombed in thick scabs of rust, clearly immovable.
The key... was it meant to open this door? Kane walked up to it, attempting to insert the brass key into an inconspicuous lock, also covered in rust. The key went in, but it wouldn't budge. He twisted with all his might, and the key emitted a groan of metal fatigue; only flakes of rust fell from the keyhole.
No. It wasn't a physical lock.
He scanned his surroundings. Rust, rust everywhere. The air, the ground, the buildings, even the massive gear phantoms... the core of the disaster was "rust." The key was brass. Brass... was it corrosion-resistant? Or perhaps... the key itself could resist this power of rust?
A thought struck him like lightning! The older Kane had left the key under the console in New York. In London... could he have left information? In a place the power of rust could not reach?
He snapped his head up, his gaze scanning the massive base of the tower. Was the power of rust ineffective against certain inert materials or energy shields? Or... was there a momentary "vacuum" at the very heart of the rust disaster?
His eyes finally fixed on a semicircular metal observation platform protruding from the tower wall, about ten meters up. The platform itself was heavily corroded, but in a small, inconspicuous depression beneath it, where it connected to the wall, there appeared to be a faint, nearly imperceptible pale blue energy membrane! The film flickered slowly, stubbornly resisting the erosion of the rust-red fog, carving out a "clean" patch the size of a palm amidst the heavy corrosion!
That was it!
Kane climbed, using his hands and feet to scale the massive pipes and rusted metal scaffolding exposed on the tower wall. Rust-dust slid away, and the metal supports groaned dangerously beneath his weight. Every movement was a gamble with death. He reached the vicinity of the depression and cautiously reached toward the pale blue energy membrane.
His fingertips met slight resistance, like touching the wall of a soap bubble. He applied a bit of pressure, and his fingers slipped through! Inside, it was dry, cold, and free of rust-dust! He quickly reached his left hand in, fumbling through the corners of the hollow.
His fingertips touched something hard, cold, and smooth!
He yanked it out.
It wasn't a journal. It wasn't a data chip.
It was a... unknown material, slightly larger than a thumb, pitch-black, with a perfectly smooth surface and no interfaces or buttons—a rectangular block! It was heavy and cold to the touch, as if it were absorbing all the surrounding light.
The moment the black block left the energy membrane!
*Hummm—!!!*
A low, deep hum, resonating with intense metallic vibration, erupted from inside the black block in Kane's hand without warning! The frequency of this hum was singular, instantly piercing through the omnipresent grinding noise of the rust in the air!
The humming seemed to trigger a chain reaction!
The entire Core Control Tower, along with the massive gear phantoms rotating in the distance, gave a violent jolt! The thick scabs of rust covering the tower walls peeled away like dried mud, revealing the dull, matte metal beneath! The "creaking" of the giant gear phantoms intensified, becoming sharp and shrill, as if they were under immense strain!
Even more terrifying, as the black block hummed, its smooth surface suddenly bloomed with countless intricate, flickering, ghostly blue patterns! These patterns flowed and combined like living things, finally projecting a fragment of unstable, blue-glowing text onto one of the block's faces:
"...Initial Ring coordinates locked... Cairo... Sun-Melting Core... underlying database... physical key interface... match... brass key... resonance frequency... 7.1Hz..."
The information vanished in a flash! The ghostly blue patterns on the black block dimmed instantly, and the humming ceased. The block returned to its cold, silent, pitch-black state.
But Kane's heart was thumping wildly, as if struck hard by that 7.1Hz resonance frequency!
Cairo! Sun-Melting Core! Underlying database! Physical key interface!
Brass key! Resonance frequency! 7.1Hz!
And... the coordinates for the Initial Ring!
All the clues were linked together by the humming of the black block! The key wasn't meant to open a lock; it was a "wrench" to start an "interface"! And to start it, a specific frequency was required—7.1Hz! This number... how similar it was to the 71-year countdown!
The aged Kane had not only left the key through billions of cycles, but at the heart of this London rust-hell, he had left the final guidance pointing to Cairo and the "Initial Ring"!
However, before Kane could process this massive influx of information—
*Swish! Swish! Swish!*
Three piercing sounds tore through the rust-red air! Three shuttle-shaped darts, glowing with dangerous blue light, struck like vipers from three different angles, aiming precisely at the rusted scaffolding where Kane stood!
The hounds of the Time Bureau, tracking the anomalous spacetime fluctuations and energy signatures, had arrived!
Kane's pupils contracted! Driven by instinct, he threw his body backward!
*Clang! Clang! Clang!*
The three darts embedded themselves deep into the rusted metal where he had stood a moment before, their tails vibrating at high frequencies, emitting a heart-stopping buzz! The metal they struck turned red-hot, and spiderweb-like cracks spread from the impact site at an astonishing speed! Terrifying corrosive energy!
"Contaminated vessel K-7! Cease resistance! Accept retrieval!" A cold, emotionless, synthetic voice cut through the rust-red fog. Three task force members, clad in dark gray uniforms and wearing smooth silver-white masks, appeared like ghosts atop the ruins below and to the side, their weapons locked onto Kane.
Kane leaned against the cold wall of the control tower, his right hand gripping the pocket watch, his left clutching the cold black block and the brass key. The rust-red fog churned before his eyes like a sea of blood.
Cairo... Sun-Melting Core... 7.1Hz...
The pocket watch countdown: 70:22:00:05.
The hunters had arrived.
There was no way back. Only forward, to leap into the next, even hotter hellish furnace!
