I walked along the roadside, looking at the pouch with a growing sense of curiosity.

What on earth was inside that was both so small and so expensive?

Gold?

Speaking of which, it suddenly dawned on me that I actually had gold in my pocket!

I immediately reached into my pocket and felt around.

That small piece of gold was still there.

It was the one from the ancestral tomb of Old Granny Er's family.

If I had known earlier, I would have just used that.

But what's done is done; I might as well keep the gold. After all, Grandpa's wish was for me to become a rich man.

I'd better save my money...

Lost in these thoughts, I continued walking along the edge of the road, hoping to catch a ride.

However, I had overestimated my location. Being out in the suburbs, there wasn't a single taxi in sight.

I walked for half an hour.

Still nothing.

The way back was simply too far.

I should have known to ask that taxi driver to wait.

Walking all the way back would take goodness knows how long.

Later, I thought about just flagging down a private car on the road and offering some money for the trouble.

It wasn't like I didn't have a bit of cash left.

Yet, no matter how frantically I waved my arms, not a single car would stop.

The sky gradually darkened.

I was still walking alone along the deserted mountain road, exhausted, waving my hand limply every now and then.

Suddenly—

"Beep—!"

A harsh, piercing sound rang out, instantly followed by the blinding glare of headlights shining from behind me.

I jumped in fright, nearly leaping out of my skin!

I quickly whipped my head around.

The bright headlights slowly dimmed to low beams, and I finally made out a red car parked in front of me.

It looked a bit like a sports car, though I couldn't tell for sure.

To my eyes, it was just a very, very red sedan.

While I stood there in a daze, the car window slowly rolled down, and a crisp, melodious female voice asked, "Need a ride?"

Hearing those words, I immediately hurried over.

"Yes, yes, yes! Could you give me a ride into the city? I'll pay you!"

As I spoke, I caught a glimpse of the person inside.

It was a stunning beauty sitting in the driver's seat.

She wore a red trench coat over a black inner garment, revealing a patch of snowy skin and a deep cleavage.

Her skin was exceptionally fair.

On her lower body, she wore black silk stockings.

With her dressed so provocatively, a country bumpkin like me instantly lowered my gaze, not daring to look any further.

It would be rather impolite, after all.

"Get in."

The woman in red gave a slight toss of her long hair, causing the ample fullness of her chest to jiggle gently as well.

I hurriedly opened the car door, got in, and faced straight ahead.

Upright and righteous.

Eyes fixed strictly forward.

I sat there as stiff as a board.

The woman didn't seem to mind my posture and slowly started the car.

There was a subtle fragrance inside the vehicle, likely from the perfume she wore.

She remained silent the entire time, seemingly lost in her own thoughts.

Her eyes carried a hint of weariness, and from time to time, she would gently touch her delicate nose.

Seeing this, I awkwardly offered, "Miss, I'm terribly sorry. I just came into town and haven't had a chance to take a shower yet. I might smell a bit."

Hearing this, the woman frowned slightly, then cast a glance up and down my entire body, a look of puzzlement flashing in her eyes.

"Don't misunderstand, handsome. I just have a bit of a cold with a runny nose, so I can't smell anything anyway."

She delivered those indifferent words in a flat tone, leaving no desire for further conversation.

Nor did I have any intention of making small talk.

I carefully clutched the cloth bag given to me by Old Man Lai.

Finally, the car turned into the city streets.

Once here, I would have no trouble hailing a cab.

So, I immediately turned to the woman and said, "Miss, dropping me off right here is fine. I can just get out and catch a taxi; I shouldn't take up any more of your time. Thank you so much..."

The woman touched her nose once more.

"It's fine. Just tell me where you need to go."

Did I really run into a good person today?

Didn't this save me the taxi fare?

I immediately smiled and said, "Thank you so much! I'm heading to Mourning Street, it's just..."

"I know."

The woman interrupted with a single phrase, then focused entirely on driving.

Driving speeds inside the city were much slower due to traffic congestion, giving the woman some time to rest.

She glanced over at me.

"Do you have a problem with your lumbar spine?"

When those words came out, I froze completely.

I instinctively looked down at my seating posture: my entire body was rigid, my neck couldn't turn, and I was sitting ramrod straight without even leaning against the backrest.

My hands were tightly gripping the cloth bag in my lap.

No matter how you looked at it, this posture was bizarre.

No wonder she thought something was wrong with my back.

I could only smile awkwardly and reply, "No, I was just worried about getting your car dirty."

The woman gave a faint smile.

"It's already dirtier than dirty. Just relax."

I had no idea what she meant by that, but I maintained my posture nonetheless.

Because I didn't dare to look at this woman too much, yet a part of me really wanted to.

Either way, my mind was conflicted.

It was safer to just look straight ahead.

At last, the car pulled to a stop at the familiar entrance of Mourning Street.

"We're here."

The woman parked the car and lit a women's cigarette.

I immediately reached into my pocket and pulled out a ten-yuan bill.

I hesitated for a moment.

With a car this nice, was ten yuan a bit too little?

A taxi ride would have cost forty.

But I didn't have forty in small change.

So I grabbed a hundred-yuan bill instead and said, "Miss, thank you so much. A taxi would usually cost forty, and since your car is so nice, I'll give you fifty. Just give me fifty back in change."

With that, I handed over the crisp red banknote.

The woman blew out a thin plume of smoke and said indifferently, "Keep it. Just go. My home isn't far from here anyway, it was on the way."

Hearing this, I quickly pulled my hand back.

Then I smiled, got out of the car, and thanked her once more. "Miss, you really are a wonderful person! Beautiful and kind-hearted, you'll be blessed with good fortune!"

The woman chuckled upon hearing this.

"A good person?"

She let out a soft, mocking laugh. "Off you go. I'll take your kind words."

"Alright, goodbye, Miss!"

I smiled and waved at her, then turned and walked into the alleyway.

I had only taken a few steps when I noticed two figures standing ahead in the street.

One fat, one thin.

One male, one female.

As I walked a bit closer, I realized it was Fatty and the female corpse.

I was just about to greet them when—

"Whoosh!"

I was sent tumbling through the air out of nowhere, crashing heavily onto the ground!

The cloth bag in my hand flew up into the sky!

The very next second, that cloth bag landed squarely in the hands of the female corpse.

Following that, I hit the pavement with a thud.

"Ouch! Will you ever stop? Do you have any idea how much effort it took me to get this stuff for you, and you attack me the moment you see me?!"

I clutched my arm as I lay on the ground and yelled at her.

The female corpse looked down at me from above and let out a cold snort: "Kind-hearted!"

Then she turned around and began to walk away with stiff, mechanical movements.

I was momentarily stunned.

The female corpse could walk now?

Although it still looked a bit weird, just like a robot, she certainly didn't have to hop around anymore.

Speechless, I picked myself up off the ground.

"You're crazy! She gave me a free ride back, what's wrong with me praising her?"

Fatty immediately sidled up beside me and whispered slyly, "She's jealous, obviously!"

Jealous?

I was slightly taken aback.

I looked at the retreating figure of the female corpse as she walked clumsily away.

I gave a disdainful chuckle. "You give me way too much credit. She's like a block of ice, why would she care about me? She's just being a psycho."

Fatty followed me toward the shop, lowering his voice as he spoke. "I think sister-in-law is pretty good. It's just a personality issue. Do you know why we came out?"

I let out a cold snort and kept walking.

"The shop was full of dead mice, it stank, that's why."

Fatty's voice sounded from behind me: "Because it got dark and she was worried about you, so she asked me to come out and wait for you..."

I stopped in my tracks, frozen on the spot...
