Jiahe Chen leaned in to see the commotion in the group chat, forgetting to take another bite of her hamburger.

“Ability users… this world is really… different now,” she murmured, a mix of bewilderment and fear in her voice.

Chen Mu didn’t rush to reply to Guang Pan.

“Join a mutual aid group? Rely on others to save you?” Mu scoffed, his fingers swiftly swiping across the screen.

“Thanks for the invite, but I’m used to going solo.”

After sending the message, he turned toward Jiahe, who was struggling to finish her last bite of hamburger. “These end-of-the-world mutual aid groups are mostly a front. In the end, the supplies always end up in the hands of those so-called ‘leaders,’ essentially a form of robbery.”

Jiahe swallowed her food and furrowed her brows lightly. “But that guy said he has abilities. What if the monsters in the black fog keep increasing…”

“Let’s see how things unfold first,” Mu interrupted her abruptly.

His phone buzzed again. Another message from Guang Pan: “Brother Mu, these times are full of danger. Even the strongest lone wolves can slip up. My ability just awakened too; I’m still figuring it out. We can exchange experiences and get stronger together.”

Mu’s heart stirred slightly. Guang Pan wasn’t entirely useless.

He replied immediately, “How did your ability awaken? Are there specific conditions?”

About half a minute later, the screen lit up.

Guang Pan: “Talent is all about luck and looks—something you might get but can’t seek out.”

“Bullshit!” Mu muttered under his breath, closing the chat without hesitation.

Guang Pan was clearly holding back, unwilling to tell the truth.

Mu then opened the system interface and entered his consciousness, issuing a command: “Query conditions for ability awakening.”

A cold system prompt sounded in his mind:

[Conditions for ability awakening vary—contact with black fog, intense stimuli near death, drastic emotional fluctuations, and other factors may be involved. Current data samples are severely insufficient for accurate analysis.]

Mu’s brow twisted into a knot. “Useless junk.”

Jiahe leaned against the wall and asked quietly, “You… you want an ability too?”

“Of course.” Mu walked to the window. Outside, the thick black fog churned like a living thing. “This lousy system only provides basic supplies and physical enhancements. It’s enough against ordinary people, but when it comes to those mutated monsters, it’s not nearly enough.”

He spun around abruptly and strode toward the bathroom. “I’m going to run a test. Stay outside and don’t come in.”

“Click.”

The bathroom door locked from the inside.

Mu took a gleaming military knife from the system space, eyes fixed on the palm of his left hand.

“The black fog can turn creatures into monsters and can awaken abilities in people. If the system can’t help, then I’ll try myself!”

He pushed open the small bathroom window. A thick, even more pungent black fog surged in eagerly, carrying an indescribable eerie aura.

Without hesitation, Mu stabbed the blade hard into his palm.

“Shhh—”

Blood gushed out, and as it touched the invading black fog, strange wisps of black smoke curled up from the wound.

Pain coursed through every limb and bone. Mu clenched his teeth, veins bulging on his forehead, but didn’t utter a sound.

Yet, aside from his palm darkening from the fog’s corruption, no ability awakened—nothing at all.

“Damn! What a waste!”

Mu cursed softly, slammed the window shut, and quickly grabbed bandages from the system space to wrap his hand haphazardly.

Building 8, 17th floor.

Sisi Chen’s eyes were almost glued to the computer screen, refreshing the homeowners’ group chat repeatedly.

“Ability users… is this for real?” she whispered.

Next to her, Xiaoxiao Chen carefully applied bright red nail polish without looking up. “Believe it or not, but that video Guang Pan sent—cups flying by themselves—I don’t think it’s fake.”

Sisi didn’t reply, her fingers clicking the mouse. “Do you think we should join Guang Pan’s mutual aid group?”

“What’s there to think about?” Xiaoxiao blew gently on her freshly painted nails. “In times like these, it’s better to cling to a strong ally than to wait to die alone.”

Sisi’s attention fixed on the photo Mu had sent in the group: a woman nibbling a hamburger, steam rising warmly. The sight churned her stomach.

She hadn’t tasted warm food in three days. Now even a dry piece of bread was a luxury.

“That bastard Mu!” Sisi ground her teeth until her lower lip turned white. “Why him? He has such a beautiful woman by his side and hamburgers to eat! Where the hell does he get these things?”

Xiaoxiao leaned in curiously. “Hey, isn’t that Jiahe Chen, the campus belle of Golden Sea University? How did she end up with someone like Mu?”

Sisi’s face darkened instantly. “Jiahe Chen? How could she be with someone like Mu…”

“What choice does she have?” Xiaoxiao sneered lightly, her tone flippant. “At a time like this, unless she’s trading her body, what other way does a delicate campus belle have to get food?”

Sisi’s fists clenched tightly, her nails digging into her flesh, causing sharp pain.

“Really… degrading herself!”

Building 7, 12th floor.

Guang Pan lounged on the sofa, deftly twirling a sharp small knife between his fingers. His phone screen displayed that striking photo of Jiahe Chen.

“Tsk, that girl’s something else.”

He licked his cracked lips and cast a cold glance at Han Pan, who was cowering in the corner.

“Han, what do you think—Is she a beauty or not?”

Han’s temple bled, his shattered glasses hanging on his nose as he trembled like a leaf. “Brother Guang… please calm down. It’s so chaotic out there now. We have to stick together—only together can we survive…”

“Shut up!”

Guang Pan kicked Han hard in the chest. Han gasped and curled up like a shrimp.

“I’m asking you! Is she pretty?!”

“Pr-pretty… Brother Guang says she’s pretty, so… she must be pretty…” Han choked out the words, almost in tears.

A playfulI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
