Chapter 108: Researching the Potion
Dragon Grandmother stood in front, coughed heavily once, and lightly tapped the ground with her scepter.
“As a princess of the Divine Dragon Clan, how could you be so rash!……”
The Divine Princess Cai Guo paid no attention whatsoever, her eyes brimming with longing for the long-missed Black Feather brother, she threw herself forward and collided head-on with Black Feather.
“Black Feather brother, you’ve finally come to see me…”
Since the separation, the Divine Princess Cai Guo had been eagerly awaiting his passing by here every day.
Seeing this, Dragon Grandmother maintained a cold and stern expression as she turned away. She truly felt no desire to involve herself in the affairs of young people, and told the guard standing nearby:
“Keep a close watch on the princess. Send these two away tomorrow!”
The Divine Princess Cai Guo led Black Feather and White Sage Ye on a tour through the Divine Dragon Palace, then arrived at an elegant banquet hall. Dragon Grandmother had already arranged a special feast for the two. The interior was utterly luxurious, with beautiful wines and delicacies filling the long dining tables, making one’s mouth water.
Divine Wood followed the princess without leaving her side, standing directly behind the Divine Princess Cai Guo’s seat to pour her drinks.
“Black Feather brother, why didn’t we see Ling Xiao Lei and the others?”
“Oh, we came a bit early. They’ll be able to reach Divine Dragon Town tomorrow as well.”
Black Feather answered while tearing into the beast meat with great mouthfuls.
The food here differed from that of the central forest, consisting mainly of monster beast meat, far more effective for strengthening the physique than ordinary fare. Black Feather thought to himself that it was no wonder the warriors of the Divine Dragon Clan living in the southern forest possessed such robust builds.
White Sage Ye ate with great care, holding a red wine glass in his hand, the very picture of a noble young master’s refined demeanor.
Divine Wood knew something of White Sage Ye, aware that he came from the Medicine Immortal Family and had been hired by him as the private physician for the Divine Princess Cai Guo, so he felt no great wariness.
Only toward the loose-haired youth at his side did he frown, inexplicably sensing an aura of evil about him, though he could not say why, and continued clicking his tongue softly.
After the meal, the Divine Princess Cai Guo led Black Feather and White Sage Ye around the Divine Dragon Palace once more, then each returned to their respective chambers.
The room assigned to Black Feather had been specially arranged by the Divine Princess Cai Guo with her subordinates. Its decorations were extravagantly grand. Black Feather stood before the high window, gazing far into the distance through the night veil. The Divine Dragon Palace stood atop a mountain peak, everything in sight.
Beyond the distant forest, the silhouette of Dragon Island coiled beneath the black night, occasionally carrying faint, low dragon roars from afar.
Black Feather felt astonishment; god dragons were creatures of ancient legend, yet he had not expected them to truly exist.
In the barbaric era, the god dragons had ruled as masters of the skies, revered by all. A dragon egg required years from hatching to breaking free, and from young dragon to adult dragon, decades more. Thus dragons were exceedingly rare. But once grown, they became beings capable of overturning clouds and seas, invincible.
Black Feather lay down on the bed and quickly fell asleep.
The following morning, another carriage waited to escort them out of the city, carrying a small, exquisitely carved box. Upon opening it, it revealed an abundance of gold and jewels.
Black Feather and White Sage Ye were delighted, guessing it to be the reward bestowed by Dragon Grandmother.
The Divine Princess Cai Guo had wished to accompany them but was stopped by Divine Wood; she could only bid farewell to Black Feather with reluctance.
As they left the royal city, the carriage continued until reaching the entrance of the largest medical clinic in Divine Dragon Town, already crowded with those seeking treatment since early dawn.
Divine Dragon Town lay at the heart of the southern continent, far larger than the previous village, roughly the size of half a holy city.
The walls rose high and imposing, the houses arranged in neat rows, with a bustling market beside the clinic. This was also the southern continent’s last major town, for beyond Dragon Island lay an endless, uninhabited desert.
The two disembarked and reunited with Red Heart.
“Is everything proceeding smoothly?” Red Heart inquired, sword sheathed across his back.
“We feasted heartily at the Divine Dragon Palace. Quite satisfying.”
“All the infected have gathered in considerable numbers. It seems we’ll need to stay a few extra days. Let’s begin the treatment at once.”
“I’ll first purge the dark aura from their bodies; the rest will be left to you.”
Ling Xiao Lei pushed her way through the crowd, emerging with a head.
“Black Feather! You’ve returned!”
She scanned left and right, relieved to find him unharmed, even noting the strange string of beast-bone beads at his throat.
“I saw Fire Dragon Fruit in the Divine Dragon Palace yesterday, but her family keeps her under strict watch and won’t let her leave the city, so I didn’t bring her along.”
“Good. We’re surrounded by wounded all day; a young girl like her would not be suited to such sights.”
Everyone resumed the heavy labor of treatment.
By dusk, Ling Meng and the other three spirit clan girls had exhausted nearly all their mana. Many of the infected had already been saved, and the dark aura clinging to those still impure had long since been absorbed by Black Feather, so within the next few days, recovery would require only the healing touch of the spirits.
The group returned to the inn to rest. After dinner, White Sage Ye had retreated to his room to study potions. The tables in the common area had become his makeshift laboratory, lined with bottles, jars, and various instruments.
Wearing white gloves, he held a pale blue test tube containing blood extracted from a severely infected patient. He then added the substance drawn from Black Feather’s body and gently shook the mixture.
Soon the extract dissolved into the blood, the original pale blue fading to a vivid crimson.
“Success!”
Through his research, White Sage Ye discovered that Black Feather’s blood contained two distinct components: one akin to demons and another resembling humans. Yet the two traits fused perfectly within his body, granting a unique resistance that allowed human blood to suppress the dark power.
He stroked his chin in thought, analyzing.
“Using this special substance from Black Feather’s blood as the base, we could produce vast quantities of anti-demon potions—an unprecedented discovery across this continent…”
In the inn’s lobby dining hall, a noisy crowd of guests filled the tables.
Red Heart practiced his sword outside the door in an open courtyard, swinging the massive blade in repetition, his forehead glistening with sweat.
Black Feather passed by and witnessed her diligent training, recalling Yi Xin.
As a child, the sight he most remembered was Yi Xin alone in the yard before the house, endlessly punching forward with her fists. It had been some time since leaving the holy city, and he wondered how the others’ cultivation was progressing.
The thought that Yi Xin might have surged ahead in this interval stirred a sense of impending defeat within him.
“This trip to the southern continent is not only for the healing task but also to hunt more demon beasts and raise our levels…”
He mused to himself.
Ling Meng and the three spirit clan girls emerged from the hot springs behind the inn, passing the gate with wooden trays of bath supplies in their arms. Their damp hair still dripped water, yet their already striking features and transcendent beauty shone even more radiantly, like blooming lotuses.
