Chapter 13: Injured

It was my first time working, and with so little experience, I assumed those bones belonged to the tomb’s owner. Judging by the tomb’s scale, if the owner’s remains were there, there should have been burial artifacts alongside them—that’s what I thought. Perhaps some personal copper seals, small and exquisite ancient jade pieces, or gold items. Greed overcame my fear, and I kept reassuring myself: “It’s nothing, nothing at all. Maybe there’s even a private seal of a vassal lord in that dark jar. If I get lucky and pull it out, I’ll strike it rich!”

Summoning my courage, I reached again to the bottom of the jar. As I was fumbling sideways, searching blindly...

“Ah!”

My index finger felt a sharp bite! It hurt badly. I quickly pulled back my hand and saw that the tip of my finger was bleeding, with two small puncture wounds.

My first thought was I’d been bitten by a snake.

Not knowing if it was venomous, I panicked and, clutching my finger, yelled as I ran towards the east side chamber.

“Second brother! Third brother! Help me!”

The floor of the east chamber was scattered with a few burial objects, far fewer than in the west chamber. The Sun brothers were crouched there, sorting through items to judge their value.

“Yunfeng, what are you shouting about? Are you seeing ghosts? Who’s out to get you?”

I showed them my now non-bleeding finger and cried urgently, “Second brother! I’ve been bitten by a venomous snake! I’m going to die from the poison!”

“What? A snakebite?” The second brother immediately grew alarmed.

He examined my finger for a moment and asked suspiciously, “Third brother, does this wound on Yunfeng’s finger, these two small holes, look like a snakebite?”

The third brother thought for a moment and shook his head. “It kind of looks like it, but something’s off, Second brother. Look at how narrow Yunfeng’s finger is and the spacing between the wounds—no snake’s head is that small.”

He pressed gently on my wound, causing fresh blood to flow out.

“Don’t worry, Yunfeng. Look at the bright color of your blood; it’s definitely not a snakebite, let alone a venomous one. I guess it’s probably a mouse bite, maybe a small mouse.”

“A mouse? Do mice bite people, Third brother?”

“Of course! You just haven’t seen much. Back in ancient times, when there were mouse infestations, mice could even attack people!”

“Yunfeng, do you feel dizzy, nauseous, or uncomfortable?”

I shook my head. “Third brother, not at all.”

“Stop overthinking. It’s nothing. Come help with the work. If you’re worried, you can go get a rabies shot at the clinic tomorrow.”

“Okay,” I nodded, feeling much relieved knowing it wasn’t a venomous snake.

Interestingly, the number of burial items in the east chamber was far fewer than in the west. Logically, both side chambers should have similar amounts, but after searching for a long time, we only found six or seven somewhat valuable bronzes. The rest were mostly badly damaged fragments, unrecognizable in shape.

“Sigh, we even brought so many bags, hoping for a big haul, but ended up with nothing but junk!” the second brother grumbled.

He pressed the walkie-talkie to report, “Boss, it’s all disappointment. The east chamber barely has any worthwhile stuff, just some small trinkets.”

The radio was silent for two minutes, then the leader ordered, “Take whatever you can. Next, quickly find the main burial chamber. The coffin’s contents are the most valuable.”

“Boss, we’ve searched all around but can’t find the main chamber. What’s going on? You know more, please analyze this,” came the reply with voices on the radio.

“That’s impossible. Wealthy and powerful people in ancient times never left themselves without a main burial chamber. You have more time; keep looking,” came the directive.

Following orders, we carefully resumed the search for the main tomb room.

A main burial chamber must have a coffin, a wooden outer casing, remains, and burial objects.

But, regrettably, after a long search, we still found no sign of the main chamber.

Packing the few Western Zhou artifacts we’d found, we called it a day.

On the way back, the leader kept shaking his head, muttering, “Impossible… no explanation…”

I was exhausted and fell asleep as soon as I touched the bed, sleeping until noon. I planned to find a small clinic for a rabies shot later.

Noticing some discomfort in my right hand, I looked at it.

My right index finger was swollen enormously, almost twice as thick as normal! The two small puncture wounds were oozing pus.

Despite the swelling, there was no pain or itching. I nervously touched it and found it completely numb.

I was terrified. The second brother took one look and was startled too. He joked, “What did you do this morning? How did you develop a One Yang Finger?”

The third brother urged, “What are you waiting for? Go see a doctor immediately!”

They called the eldest brother, who knew the area better. He took me to a nearby small clinic.

The doctor was stunned. He said in his twenty-plus years of practice, he’d never seen a finger swell like this. He refused to treat me.

Not knowing what bit me and unwilling to prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs blindly, he advised us to go to a large hospital as soon as possible. At this stage, amputation might be necessary.

The thought of amputation terrified me.

Second brother said it was a mouse bite, but can a mouse bite lead to amputation? Was it a poisonous mouse?

With no choice, I went to Shunde First People's Hospital.

The emergency doctor frowned, looking at my swollen finger. “Your temperature is normal with no infection signs. Let’s do an X-ray to see if there’s fluid buildup or something else causing the swelling.”

After the X-ray, the doctor said, “It’s fluid accumulation, and the wound is inflamed.” He asked if I felt any discomfort; I shook my head.

He then used large acupuncture needles from his kit to prick two small holes in my finger, which I didn’t even feel.

With slight pressure, a large amount of yellow-white fluid immediately drained out.

After draining, my finger shrank noticeably. The doctor prescribed amoxicillin and told me to take two pills and avoid spicy food.

Thanking the doctor, we returned to the innI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
