Love at First Sight Chapter 29 The Fine Brocade Courtyard
Night had just fallen, and a cold wind swept through the streets. The difference between day and night temperatures was becoming increasingly apparent. The moon hung dimly in the sky, and the city lights were beginning to glow. Despite the hour, the streets bustled with people, and every shop remained open for business.
This delighted her—indeed, the capital was a place of true prosperity. Here, one could enjoy a vibrant nightlife, something other towns surely lacked. Wen Yueqing felt a pang of hunger; she had nearly finished her shopping, yet she was reluctant to return to the prince’s residence so early. Who knew when she would be permitted to leave again? She wished time would slow, so she might savor this rare freedom. Fortunately, Zun You did not hurry her, letting her wander as she pleased.
As a maid, leaving the residence required her master’s permission. Now, living in the royal household, the rules were even stricter. Yet Zun You was indulgent and had bent many rules for her sake. Thinking of this, Wen Yueqing felt immensely fortunate—her luck was extraordinary. Had she encountered anyone else, her days would not be so comfortable. She wouldn’t be so free in the residence, and even her life might not be secure.
Lost in thought, her stomach rumbled again. “Where shall we go for dinner tonight?” she turned to ask Zun You.
“I thought you didn’t need to eat. What’s this—are you finally tired from wandering?” Zun You’s lips curled into a mocking smile. Wen Yueqing must have been stifled for so long; a simple trip outside made her this excited.
She shook her head, replying, “I’m not tired at all, but I worry you might be. You brought me out to enjoy myself—how could I let you go hungry? Don’t you agree?”
“Well, thank you for thinking of me! So, Master Zuo, what would you like to eat? My treat.” Zun You patted his chest grandly.
“I don’t really know what I want. Let’s walk a bit and see—when we find a place that looks appetizing, we’ll go in.” Wen Yueqing scanned the restaurants on either side of the street, searching for one that promised good food.
As they strolled, they came upon a grand restaurant adorned with red banners and colorful decorations. Above the door, three golden characters read: “Mei Jin Hall.” Two alluring women stood at the entrance, beckoning guests in with coquettish gestures.
This was the capital’s most famous pleasure house! Men and women streamed in and out, music and singing drifted from within, and the place was lively and bustling.
Wen Yueqing’s eyes sparkled as she read the sign aloud, “Mei Jin Hall.” She chuckled to herself, thinking, “What luck! No need to ask—this must be one of those renowned brothels from ancient times. I must see it for myself.”
She hurried forward, declaring, “That one, let’s go there!”
Zun You realized her intention and quickly pulled her back by the arm. “Where are you going? I thought you wanted dinner.”
“Yes, dinner! Let’s eat there,” Wen Yueqing replied, pointing at Mei Jin Hall.
Zun You eyed her suspiciously. “Do you know what that place is?”
“Of course! It’s a brothel,” Wen Yueqing blinked innocently at him.
She then spoke with excitement, “Let’s eat there—not only can we drink, but we’ll have beautiful company, and we can enjoy music and dancing while we dine. Isn’t that wonderful?”
In this world, brothels were the best places for nightlife. Wen Yueqing was determined to seize this opportunity and have a bit of fun.
“You’re a young lady—shouldn’t you learn something proper instead of frequenting brothels?” Zun You said incredulously.
Wen Yueqing found his seriousness amusing. “We’re just going in for fun—what’s the harm? Besides, scholars and gentlemen have always come here. It’s no big deal.”
She looked at him expectantly. “Let’s go inside and see, shall we? Besides, I’m dressed as a man today—no one will know.”
“No, no, I can’t let you lead me astray,” Zun You shook his head.
Wen Yueqing clung to his arm. “I won’t corrupt you. Please, just this once—I truly want to go.”
Zun You considered briefly. “Very well, I’ll take you tonight. But in exchange, you must promise me one thing. Agreed?”
“Yes, yes, I promise! Just one thing—if I can do it, I’ll certainly agree,” Wen Yueqing responded without hesitation.
“Good. Let’s go.” Zun You clasped his hands behind his back, feigning composure. In truth, it was his first time in such a place, and he felt a flutter of excitement.
Liu Yi and Kang Qi followed behind. Neither tried to persuade them otherwise—they knew it would be pointless.
As they reached the entrance, two young women greeted them warmly. “Welcome, gentlemen, so glad you’ve come.”
“Please, come inside—the ladies are waiting to serve you.” The women spoke cheerfully, ushering them in.
Wen Yueqing beamed, her smile bright as sunshine, as if returning home, her steps light and lively. In contrast, Zun You seemed slightly nervous, his stride stiff.
The moment they entered, their ears were filled with sweet voices and the sound of clinking cups. Laughter and conversation mingled with music and dance, smoke wafted through the air, lending the place an unreal, dreamlike quality.
In the center of the hall, a square stage held two musicians, playing zithers with nimble fingers, their music flowing smoothly and brightly. Four dancers, clad in crimson silk skirts, spun gracefully to the cheerful melody, their movements enchanting and mesmerizing.
Guests sat around, drinking and making merry, clapping along to the performance.
Wen Yueqing joined in, applauding. “Wonderful, such splendid dancing!”
Madam Hua, the proprietress, noticed them. These two were dressed in fine clothing—clearly young gentlemen from wealthy families. She smiled broadly and hurried over to greet them.
“Oh, look at these fine young men—so handsome and charming!” she cooed, reaching for Zun You’s arm.
He instinctively stepped back. Madam Hua, experienced and shrewd, immediately sensed he was a newcomer, thinking she could make a tidy profit tonight.
Unfazed, she continued, “Will you be sitting in the main hall, or would you prefer a private room?”
“Private room,” Zun You replied quickly, not giving Wen Yueqing a chance to speak.
He guessed right—Wen Yueqing had wanted to sit in the main hall, but considering Zun You was a prince, she thought it safer to choose a private room. Without argument, she followed obediently.
