Chapter 132: Complete Refit
Perhaps Fengyun Yidao was right—not every boss is as brutal as the Mountain King. The Mountain King's insanely high damage output mainly comes from his Frenzy passive, which boosts his attack speed excessively. Other bosses have normal attack speeds, even if their attack power is higher than the Mountain King's, their damage output per unit time doesn’t surpass his.
With that in mind, this golden ant boss might not be so difficult, as long as it doesn’t have overly troublesome skills. I’ll just inform Boss Wu and then head back to town.
“We’ve found the boss—a level 40 red boss. The two of us can’t take it down, so I’ve called for reinforcements. Wait there for a bit; I’m going back to upgrade my gear before coming back.”
“Alright, I’ll just slowly grind monsters by myself then.”
After Zhang Shan cast the recall spell, he first went to the warehouse to retrieve and equip three pieces of red gear. Then he teleported to the auction house to check if he could buy the remaining pieces he needed at a reasonable price.
His current gear included a weapon, armor, boots, necklace, and one bracer. He still needed two rings, a hat, and another bracer. He aimed to buy mostly red-grade equipment, hoping they wouldn’t be too expensive.
Though he still had ten million gold coins saved, he couldn’t spend it all at once. The red gear would only serve as a temporary upgrade for about ten levels. He needed to save gold for skill books and to craft legendary artifacts and spiritual weapons—those were the true treasures.
First, he searched for a level 30 hat. Hats are generally the cheapest equipment, especially for fragile classes, since they only add some defense and health. Even red hats don’t boost stats much, so the slight increase is often negligible for fragile characters.
What Zhang Shan really valued in red gear were the agility attribute and the special effects—red gear usually had two special effects. Hats always came with a fixed health regeneration effect, and the other effect was randomly generated.
Filtering for all agility-based level 30 hats, red items were scarce. Even for an unpopular item like hats, there were only about fifty pieces, priced between 50,000 and 100,000 gold coins. This was acceptable.
Zhang Shan purchased a hat for 60,000 gold—adding 1,000 health, over 200 defense, and 160 agility. The two special effects were +10 health regeneration and +3% defense. The effects were mediocre, but there were no better agility hats with good effects in the auction house.
With the hat settled, he searched for a bracer next, which was crucial for him due to its attack speed bonus. Bracers were more expensive than hats, roughly 10,000 to 20,000 gold coins, which was reasonable.
For fragile classes, equipment that adds attack power sells better—like weapons and accessories. Other gear, except cloaks, rarely fetches high prices because they don’t drastically improve a player’s strength.
Zhang Shan spent 80,000 gold on a bracer. One special effect increased attack speed by 10, which was normal; the other was a poor effect, increasing mana regeneration by 3%. The mana regen was useless to him but he had no choice—he had to ignore the useless effect for the sake of attack speed.
Two rings remained, which were the most important. Filtering for agility-based level 30 red rings, there were only about twenty on the auction house, all very expensive. The highest starting bid was set at 300,000 gold coins—insanely pricey.
But there was no alternative—everyone loves attack power, especially fragile classes, since survival depends on dealing massive damage quickly. When grinding monsters, fragile classes can’t tank damage with defense or health; they have to kill enemies before they get close.
Defense and health only truly matter in PvP or boss fights. During regular monster grinding and leveling, their value is limited. Attack power equipment, on the other hand, is always the best choice in any scenario.
Therefore, weapons and accessories always sell for two to three times the price of other gear. Perhaps in late-game, players will balance attributes more evenly and prices will converge, but early on, attack power reigns supreme.
Despite the high cost, Zhang Shan decided to buy two rings. After all, he still had over ten million gold coins saved. You have to spend to earn—better gear makes the game more enjoyable.
He selected two rings with similar stats and purchased them for nearly a million gold coins total. Although he had a damaged ring that could become an artifact once repaired, he didn’t know when that would happen. It was better to buy two red rings now; if the artifact ring is eventually fixed, the red rings would still be easy to sell.
Red equipment is always in demand, even in late game, as it is currently the highest-level gear players can normally obtain.
The two newly bought rings had similar stats and identical effects:
Perfect Purple-Gold Rings (Red Grade): Level 30, Physical Attack 600-680, Agility 158, Effect 1: Critical Hit, Effect 2: Enhanced Attack.
Critical Hit: Increases critical strike chance by 2%.
Enhanced Attack: Increases attack power by 3%.
Not bad at all. Between the two rings and his necklace, the combined critical hit rate was 6%. The two rings’ enhanced attack effects added a total of 6% more attack power.
He also had two passive skills that boosted attack power, and his artifact granted an additional 10% attack boost. This meant his total attack power could increase by 36% beyond the base value—exceptionally strong.
After equipping all level 30 gear, his stats were:
