Xia An was so frustrated she laughed. "Do you take me for a fool? Do you really have to wait until the blood test results come back to give up?"

Zhou Mo shook his head, looking as calm as ever. "Didn't you take my blood for testing when I first came in? Why not just wait and see? Why would I be stubborn at a time like this?"

Seeing the certainty in Zhou Mo’s eyes, Zhang Huai’an began to lose his composure. He asked suspiciously, "You don't think we wouldn't be able to detect if you mixed in your own blood, do you? Even if what you say is true, why on earth would you bleed yourself out for no reason?"

Although Xia An claimed she didn't believe him, she had already quietly sent a message to the forensics department. She wanted to see how Zhou Mo intended to fabricate this story.

Zhou Mo sighed and pointed to the back of his head. "Actually, I was attacked, and after the assault, I seem to have lost quite a few memories."

"When I woke up, I found myself lying in a pool of blood. I was terrified by the sight, thinking I had killed someone. My head was spinning, I panicked, and I ended up cleaning up the blood and everything else."

"By the time I woke up the next morning and started thinking about it, you had already arrived at my door. It wasn't until after you left that I started recalling details about the attack."

Xia An gave a dry laugh. "Are you trying to con a ghost?"

"If any normal person woke up in a pool of blood, wouldn't their first thought be that they had been attacked?"

Zhou Mo knew this was a hard point to explain, so he simply shrugged. "I have amnesia."

Xia An grit her teeth, ready to lose her temper, when a message popped up on her phone.

[The two DNA samples match. There is no trace of a second person's DNA.]

Huh?

Her hand, which had been raised to slam the table, slowly lowered. Xia An rubbed her eyes, confirmed the information on her phone repeatedly, and quickly picked it up to ask:

[Are you sure? Was all the blood found in the room tested?]

The reply came back shortly.

[Positive. You can question my personal life, but please don't question my ancestral expertise. The suspect you brought in is the very victim you assumed existed.]

Xia An stared blankly at the screen, then looked at the polite smile on Zhou Mo’s face, feeling as though her intelligence had been insulted.

Impossible!

It absolutely could not be this simple!

There was definitely something going on here!

Watching Xia An’s expression, Zhang Huai’an asked curiously, "Captain, what’s wrong?"

Xia An flipped her phone face down on the table and looked at Zhou Mo with a stern expression. "You say you're the victim, but why didn't I see any wounds on you? And what were you doing at the Sunshine Health Center today looking for a man named Liao Feng?"

Xia An was still unwilling to give up.

Zhou Mo lowered his head and gestured to the back of his skull with his handcuffed fingers. "There is a wound, but it's not bleeding much anymore."

Xia An signaled to Zhang Huai’an, who immediately stood up, walked into the small interrogation room, and checked the back of Zhou Mo’s head.

"Hiss!"

"Doctor! Get a doctor, quickly!"

"How on earth are you still running around like this, kid?"

Zhang Huai’an shouted immediately, his face turning pale.

Hearing this, Xia An rushed over, only to see a wound about six centimeters long, deep enough to expose bone. The edges of the wound were pale and everted; it was clearly a severe injury.

Xia An’s legs began to tremble. She pushed Zhang Huai’an toward the door to fetch the doctor and steadied Zhou Mo’s shoulders, swearing as she did.

"Damn it all!"

"Are you trying to get us killed? If you were this badly hurt, you should have said so! If you dare to collapse here, I'll sue you for insurance fraud!"

Xia An was truly frightened. While the City Guard had the right to interrogate, that didn't mean they could use torture! If word of this got out, their Zhongshan Street office would be finished!

Seeing their extreme reaction, Zhou Mo waved his hand. "I'm actually fine, just a little anemic..."

"Shut up!"

After this commotion, the interrogation could not continue.

When the female forensic doctor on duty walked in and took a look at Zhou Mo, she clucked her tongue in amazement. "Brother, your constitution is something else! Being this close to severe anemia and still acting like you’re ready to run a marathon—that’s a rare sight."

The doctor examined him, stitched up the wound that the brain had deliberately pushed outward, and turned to Xia An. "The young man has a good constitution. There’s nothing fundamentally wrong; give him some blood and glucose, and he’ll be fine after a couple of days of rest."

"I'll start him on our office's reserve supply. You figure out the costs yourselves."

After hooking Zhou Mo up to a bottle of glucose, the doctor plucked a lollipop from Xia An’s bag and walked away, chewing on it.

Relieved that Zhou Mo was in no real danger, Zhang Huai’an and Xia An finally let out a breath.

Xia An chewed on her manicure, thought for a moment, and said, "Tell you what, you stay in our City Guard medical room for treatment these next two days. You probably can't afford a hospital, and your situation is a bit complicated. It’s convenient for us to treat you here, and it’ll be covered by us. What do you think?"

Zhang Huai’an, who had dyed blonde hair, nodded and added with concern, "Exactly. Since our City Guard members face danger every day, our forensic doctors are quite skilled in medicine as well."

Zhou Mo wanted to refuse, as his wound was just a fabrication of his brain, but seeing Xia An’s attitude, it was clear she didn't intend to let him leave so easily.

Zhou Mo put on a grateful smile and nodded. "I don't know how to thank you—I'm truly grateful!"

Xia An gave a tight-lipped, insincere smile. "Don't mention it, it's the least we can do."

"It’s getting late, so just rest here for the night. We won't disturb your recovery any further."

After they left the infirmary, Zhou Mo sighed with relief.

"Whew..."

"Finally managed to bluff my way through."

Looking at the IV drip above him, Zhou Mo sighed helplessly. "But the real trouble is just beginning..."

Perhaps due to the blood loss, Zhou Mo tried to clear his thoughts while lying in bed, but he soon felt sleepy.

Feeling his consciousness blurring, he tapped his skull and whispered, "Behave yourself. We're not at home; don't go pulling any stunts..."

No sooner had he finished the warning than he drifted into a deep sleep.

Just then, a slit appeared in Zhou Mo’s skull. His brain, punching through the opening, crawled out and glared at the IV drip with fury in its eyes.

*They dared to drug the glucose!*

It looked at Zhou Mo, then back at the IV bottle.

After much hesitation, the brain decided not to smash the bottle. It tucked itself back inside and sealed the wound shut. Then, it jumped off the bed and scurried out through a side window.

...

About four hours later, Zhou Mo felt something poking his face.

He opened his eyes groggily, then instantly became wide awake.

Because he saw the brain.

No, rather, he saw the brain holding another brain.

"No... wait, what did you do?"

"Whose brain is this?"

"You didn't knock out Xia An, did you?"

Zhou Mo looked at the surroundings, his heart sinking as he confirmed once again that he was still in the City Guard office.

"It’s over. I’m completely screwed."
