Chapter 21: Being Followed!
Zhou Mo woke from the Sea of Subconsciousness feeling rather depressed.
This was entirely because what he had learned from the second sea was somewhat abstract. While it could be considered a self-defense skill honed to perfection, it was honestly a bit pathetic. Yet, no matter how displeased he was, he had to accept it. After all, there was only one figure in that second sea; he had no other choice.
The second ability Zhou Mo acquired could barely be called a leg technique, though it differed from Xia An’s. This style focused exclusively on low-level strikes. In his subconscious, he had transformed into a young man, following a gaunt, bespectacled middle-aged man. As they let out strange cries, they would strike at a mannequin’s groin with the tips of their leather shoes. The technique was incredibly precise and fierce; the toe of the boot always hit the target with deadly accuracy, regardless of the stance. There was no elegance of traditional martial arts here—only a ruthless determination to achieve the goal at any cost.
This experience seemed to stir some of Zhou Mo’s lost memories. It felt as if he had learned from this middle-aged man for a time during his childhood. He seemed to be a distant relative named Chen He or something similar. Shaking his head, Zhou Mo cast those chaotic memories aside. While acquiring experiences didn't place much of a burden on him, the residual impact on his psyche was undeniable. He felt quite unwell.
"It seems I can't absorb too many experiences in a short time, or my mind won't be able to handle it. I might end up a madman from all these jumbled memories."
Zhou Mo sighed, turning to see the Brain lying limply on the pillow, fast asleep. 'Is it that tired from helping me become a Deep Diver?'
The Brain seemed to notice that Zhou Mo had woken up and listlessly flicked its eyeballs to gesture. Zhou Mo understood immediately: "I know, I know. I’m going out to buy you glucose now. Two bags, right?"
The two eyeballs curled in the air twice. Zhou Mo’s mouth twitched: "Fine, I’ll buy you four bags."
Since he was carrying Liao Feng’s brain in his head, Zhou Mo decided to let it get some rest while he headed out to the pharmacy and picked up some dinner. As he walked, he pondered what he had seen in the deep sea of his subconscious. It was certain now that one of the two seas belonged to him, while the other belonged to his predecessor. The reason his own sea felt as still as death was likely because he did not belong to this world. However, the predecessor's sea was strange, especially that young man he had touched.
Since he was capable of being a stunt double and seemed to have experienced such high-stakes scenarios, why had his predecessor ended up in such a miserable state? Three or four hundred meters shouldn't be that far, right? Based on what Xia An had said, distance in the Sea of Subconsciousness represented not the strength of an ability, but the closeness of a blood relationship. If they were indeed relatives, then his predecessor's living situation was definitely not right.
"It seems I’ll have to investigate myself when I get the chance..."
While deep in thought, Zhou Mo bought four bags of glucose from the pharmacy and packed a dinner from a nearby small restaurant. Just as he was preparing to head home under the cover of night, the brain of Liao Feng inside his skull suddenly began to act up. Zhou Mo’s eyes began to twitch uncontrollably, as if something were desperately trying to force him to turn his head.
"What the hell are you doing!"
Zhou Mo covered his eyes and turned, and at that moment, he found himself staring fixedly at someone in the crowd behind him. The person looked unremarkable—the type you would forget the moment they vanished into a crowd. Zhou Mo was puzzled by the Brain's erratic behavior, but as he turned away and walked a few steps, he suddenly felt a strange gaze on his back, as if someone were watching him with malice.
'Huh? What is this feeling?'
As Zhou Mo started to turn back, Liao Feng’s brain frantically swiveled its eyes, signaling him not to, and instead directed his gaze toward a nearby supermarket. After a moment of hesitation, Zhou Mo decided to see what the Brain wanted.
Inside the supermarket, he caught sight of the man behind him through the reflection on the merchandise—the man had been following him the whole time!
Damn it! He was being followed! If Liao Feng’s brain hadn't discovered it in time, Zhou Mo would never have realized. More importantly, he could feel the malice radiating from the man. As this was his first time being stalked, Zhou Mo felt a bit panicked, especially since the malice made his skin crawl. His first instinct was to take his phone out and report the situation to Xia An. He needed to confirm if this person was with the City Guard.
But just then, the two eyeballs in his head began to spin wildly! *Ugh...* Since the brain was connected to his own, the sensation nearly made Zhou Mo vomit. He quickly pressed his forehead: "What is your problem?"
The eyeballs couldn't pop out to gesture, so they could only writhe within his skull to convey information. Miraculously, Zhou Mo understood the meaning: *Do not call the police!*
Zhou Mo quickly calmed down, realizing that calling the police would indeed be a mistake. It would only alert the enemy. If this person turned out to be from the Brain-Eating Demon, calling the police would mean watching a lead slip away. No matter what, he couldn't make a scene now; he had to keep the person steady and confirm their identity first.
It seemed Liao Feng’s brain was well-versed in counter-surveillance. Zhou Mo mused for a moment and muttered, "But what should I do now?"
The eyes quickly shifted toward a cooking pot nearby, then toward the direction of his home. Zhou Mo followed instructions immediately, buying a brand-new metal pot and nonchalantly heading home. As he kept a quiet watch on his surroundings, he couldn't help but think that this was probably how he had been discovered when he was tailing Liao Feng. If the Brain had this capability, Zhou Mo felt that the refrigerator he had bought hadn't been a total waste.
By the time Zhou Mo entered his apartment complex, the man hadn't followed him in, but Zhou Mo could still feel the gaze on his back until he stepped inside his home. It was a truly magical feeling, like having a third eye.
Once inside, he locked the door, dropped the pot, and flopped onto the bed, grabbing the eyeballs and shaking them back and forth. "Wake up! Something big has happened! It’s highly likely someone from the Brain-Eating Demon has tracked me down!"
Roused from its sleep, the Brain was groggy for a moment before steadying itself on the bed, but its two eyeballs were filled with killing intent. *You must be tired of living, you bastard.*
