As far as Zhou Mo was concerned, whether the culprit was a ghost or a female ghost, whether there was a case or not—it was all beside the point. What mattered was finding the owner of that familiar voice.

In any case, the woman named Ma Jiao was unlikely to run off anytime soon, and she did not appear to pose much of a threat.

Since she had not killed anyone yet, the malice within her could not be considered especially strong. Besides, Zhou Mo needed evidence before he could apprehend her. He could hardly accuse Ma Jiao of being the mastermind controlling the female ghost without proof.

After all, before the subconscious monster revealed itself, only Zhou Mo could see it. Even the pagers hanging from the City Guards’ belts could not detect it.

So until Ma Jiao actually committed a crime, Zhou Mo was better off focusing on the videos and searching for that voice.

And so, four hours passed.

“Good afternoon, dear viewers…”

“Our station’s reporter brings you this report…”

With his eyes closed, Zhou Mo tapped away at the keyboard. He listened only to the first sentence of each conversation before swiftly switching to the next clip.

All morning, Zhou Mo listened to recordings from more than a hundred programs, yet that familiar voice never appeared.

“Could I have remembered it wrong?”

After an entire morning with nothing to show for it, Zhou Mo could not help frowning.

A local television station had only so many reporters and hosts, and there were only a handful of recognizable personalities. Zhou Mo had gone through the entire lineup, yet he still could not find the voice that had struck him as familiar.

“Could I have overlooked something…?”

Just as Zhou Mo began to doubt himself, Brain Bro suddenly plucked out his own eyeballs, opened the top of his skull, and crawled out.

The sight startled Zhou Mo badly. “My brother, why did you suddenly come out without warning?”

“If there’s a camera in this room, we’re finished!”

Zhou Mo hurried over and locked the lounge door from the inside. When he turned around, he saw that Brain Bro had already climbed onto the ventilation duct and was staring at him.

“What the hell?”

He had no idea how Brain Bro managed it, but with his two round, gleaming eyeballs, he actually undid the protective grille over the ventilation duct.

Curious, Zhou Mo walked over. Brain Bro immediately pressed one eyeball against his face and pinned his forehead firmly to the metal panel of the duct.

“What are you trying to do…?”

Before Zhou Mo could finish speaking, he suddenly heard the voices of two women coming from inside his own head.

“Damn!”

The curse slipped from Zhou Mo’s lips before he could stop it.

He discovered that the voices had traveled through his forehead and were reverberating inside his hollow skull. His brainless head had astonishingly become a sound amplifier.

Good heavens!

Who knew you could play it like this?

As expected of a scientist’s brain—the breadth of its thinking was truly beyond imagination!

But Zhou Mo had no time to marvel. He realized that one of the speakers was Ma Jiao, whom he had just seen.

“Chen Qianqian, I’m warning you. Stay away from my fiancé from now on!”

The other voice that followed sounded delicate and syrupy sweet.

“Teacher Ma, Teacher Zhang and I are only in an ordinary teacher-student relationship. I merely took your place as the host and partnered with Teacher Zhang. Surely you aren’t going to get jealous over something like that?”

Although he could not see what was happening in the room, Zhou Mo could somehow hear the unmistakable scent of tea in her voice.

He had been rather irritated at first by Brain Bro pressing him against the ventilation duct. But now, a powerful spirit of gossip had ignited within him.

Even the gloom from finding nothing all morning vanished without a trace.

Ma Jiao’s furious voice echoed inside Zhou Mo’s skull.

“You’re only acting so outrageously because your father is the station director. Don’t think I don’t know that you were the one who put depilatory cream in the shampoo you gave me!”

At those words, Zhou Mo completely lost his composure. Even Brain Bro’s two eyeballs went clattering into the ventilation duct.

Good grief!

What kind of grudge drove someone to do something like that?

Yet Chen Qianqian merely smiled.

“Is that so? So that’s the kind of person I am in Teacher Ma’s eyes?”

Ma Jiao gave a cold snort. “Do you really think no one knows what you’ve done? I’d like to see how your father protects you after this comes to light!”

Chen Qianqian replied seductively, “Go ahead and tell whoever you want. I’m just curious what Teacher Zhang will think after hearing this recording.”

Click!

Chen Qianqian seemed to have pressed a button. Immediately afterward, a muffled conversation reached Zhou Mo’s mind.

“Ma Jiao, our relationship ends here. Don’t come looking for me again.”

“Sun Zhongwen! You toyed with my feelings and used my body, and now you think you can—”

Zhou Mo did not hear the rest. He had already lifted his head.

What the recording contained was no longer important.

The two dark hollows of Zhou Mo’s eye sockets curved into a beautiful arc.

“After waiting so long, at last the day has come…”

“Brain Bro, it’s time to get to work.”

…

In the room next door, Ma Jiao was beside herself with rage.

Her sharp fingernails had already pierced her palms, while the female ghost crawling across the ceiling grew increasingly solid, no longer merely a translucent phantom.

“Where exactly did you get that recording?”

Unfortunately, Chen Qianqian had not realized how serious the situation was. Instead, she folded her arms and smiled mockingly.

“Teacher Ma, what do you think would happen if I played this recording for Teacher Zhang?”

“The person who truly toyed with someone’s feelings—wasn’t that you?”

“That white-clad female ghost was nothing more than an excuse you invented during your livestream to cover up the fact that your wig was about to fall off. Did you really think I didn’t know?”

“You even had everyone at the station cooperate with you in putting on this little performance. You certainly think highly of yourself.”

Chen Qianqian looked at Ma Jiao smugly, as though victory were already hers.

“How about this? Break up with Teacher Zhang and leave the television station, and I’ll delete the recording.”

Ma Jiao could no longer suppress the malice in her heart. Her reason was rapidly swallowed by the subconscious monster.

She tore off the wig from her head, revealing a gleaming bald scalp and bulging, sinister veins.

Chen Qianqian was still preparing to continue her taunts when she saw strands of hair rapidly sprouting from Ma Jiao’s scalp. In the next instant, her entire face was engulfed by hair.

Her professional outfit slowly transformed into a pale dress, while her body grew gaunt and emaciated.

Chen Qianqian’s proud expression froze. She was just about to scream when Ma Jiao’s hair surged forward and wrapped tightly around her neck.

“Uuuugh!”

Chen Qianqian finally panicked. She struggled desperately, clawing at the hair around her throat, but more and more strands appeared, burrowing into her body through her pores.

Countless sobs echoed in Chen Qianqian’s ears.

Ma Jiao floated beside her like a wandering spirit, her melancholy voice worming into Chen Qianqian’s ears.

“Didn’t you think I was merely pretending back then?”

Driven by the instinct to survive, Chen Qianqian finally forced a sentence from her throat.

“The deputy station director said… the detective commissioned by the City Guards has arrived. If you kill me… you won’t be able to escape…”

Ma Jiao, now completely controlled by the subconscious monster, let out a shrill, mocking laugh.

“The one killing you is the subconscious monster. What does that have to do with me?”

“Besides, what is one detective supposed to be worth?”

“The City Guards couldn’t solve the case. Do you really think a detective can find me?”

“Go to your death in peace…”

Bang!

The lounge door was kicked open, and a sunny young man wearing sunglasses appeared in the doorway, rubbing his hands together impatiently.

“Let’s get this over with. There’s something important I want to ask you.”

“Otherwise, if I lose control of my brain later, don’t blame me for being too rough.”
