Chapter 24: My Brain Lacks a Sense of Proportion
"Run, Zhou Mo!"
The shout seemed to snap the monitor back to his senses. He raised his pistol and aimed it directly at Zhou Mo, who was standing in the corner. As the barrel pointed at him, Zhou Mo’s mind went blank. His body reacted on instinct; he tilted his head to the side and collapsed sideways.
Bang! Bang!
The bullets grazed his cheek and shattered the window behind him. A bloody streak appeared on Zhou Mo’s face, and he finally realized that the man truly intended to kill him.
The monitor seemed prepared to fire again, but he found that his pistol was empty. He tossed the gun aside, pulled a crowbar from his waistband, and charged toward Zhou Mo.
Just then, Zhang Huaian, already wounded, lunged with a final burst of strength, wrapping his arms tightly around the monitor’s legs. He shouted at Zhou Mo, "Run!"
Zhou Mo knew he couldn't wait any longer; the man was determined to end his life. Without hesitation, he made a split-second decision, jumped up, and dove through the window.
The height of the third floor was neither too high nor too low for an ordinary person. If you were lucky, you might only break a bone; if you were unlucky and landed on your head, it was a death sentence. But Zhou Mo moved while still in mid-air, rolling upon impact to absorb the momentum.
Once he steadied himself, Zhou Mo glanced back once before sprinting toward the exit of the residential complex without looking back.
Seeing Zhou Mo jump, the monitor kicked Zhang Huaian away and leaped after him. He didn’t roll like Zhou Mo; he simply landed with slightly bent knees and immediately resumed his pursuit.
Back in the room, Zhang Huaian’s phone, tucked in his pocket, vibrated incessantly as he lay unconscious, coughing up blood.
[Speedster: What’s the situation?]
[Speedster: Answer me!]
[Speedster: Where are you? Something went wrong, didn't it?]
[Speedster: Damn it!]
[Speedster: I’m ten minutes away!]
[Speedster: Five minutes!]
...
After exiting the complex, Zhou Mo ran toward the small park behind it. Listening to the heavy footsteps behind him, his expression became increasingly calm.
Zhang Huaian, I’m afraid...
Thinking of the words Zhang Huaian had shouted and the resolute look in his eyes, Zhou Mo’s mood darkened. Though he and the City Guard stood on opposite sides, he had developed a certain fondness for Zhang Huaian. A rookie guard with a strong sense of justice—such a young, passionate man had died right before his eyes.
"Heh..."
In the small park, only a few streetlights flickered dimly. Zhou Mo stopped, breathing heavily, and looked around, nodding to himself. This place would do.
Seeing Zhou Mo stop, the tall silhouette of the monitor slowed his pace, conserving energy as he approached.
"Why stop running?" The monitor licked his lips, clutching the crowbar, his back slightly hunched.
Zhou Mo looked at his posture and realized with a start, "I understand. You’re a Hunter."
The monitor chuckled. "Smart. So, you’re a Diver, then?"
"It seems the boss was right. You’re a major problem. Eliminating you first was definitely the right call..."
Before he could finish, the monitor threw the crowbar!
It whistled toward Zhou Mo’s face. Zhou Mo, as if prepared, rolled on the ground without a shred of dignity to dodge the projectile, seizing the chance to grab a handful of sand.
The monitor charged forward, pulling a dagger from his sleeve with his other hand, aiming to stab Zhou Mo in the back. But Zhou Mo had anticipated this. He flung the sand directly into the monitor’s eyes!
"You!"
The monitor raised his arm to block, but the movement left his side completely exposed. Zhou Mo’s foot struck out like a scorpion’s tail, aiming precisely for the space between the man's legs!
"Ugh!"
The ruthless, cold-blooded monitor let out a strange, choked sound. It didn’t matter if you were a hunter or prey, a killer or an agent—if you were a man, you couldn't withstand that strike.
The monitor clamped his legs together, hunched over, veins bulging on his neck as he glared at Zhou Mo, unable to muster any strength.
Zhou Mo clapped his hands, his expression emotionless. "Would you mind telling me who this 'boss' of yours is?"
The monitor, enduring the pain radiating through his abdomen, spat out, "You’re a dead man, you little bastard!"
I was careless!
I never expected this brat to be a Diver, and I never imagined the target would be so devoid of decency! His experience as a Hunter had always served him well in killing, but he had tripped up over a mere kid today.
He kicked the crotch!
And that kick was incredibly fast, as if he had specifically trained for it! The monitor mentally scanned every fighting style he knew, but he had never heard of one that specialized in such low-blow tactics.
Zhou Mo smiled. "You’ve got a real sense of professional integrity, don’t you? In that case, don't blame me."
He walked back as if taking a stroll, picked up the crowbar from the ground, blew the dust off it, and looked at the monitor. "I’ll give you one last chance. Tell me who that boss is."
Unable to stand straight after several attempts, the monitor steeled himself, his face twisting into a hideous mask.
"Do you really think I’d dare to come here against the City Guard with only these tricks?"
Veins pulsed on the monitor’s neck. Suddenly, he opened his mouth, and a pitch-black hand reached out from within. It clawed at his cheeks, as if something were trying to crawl out from inside him!
Even though he could have attacked, Zhou Mo stood still, clutching the crowbar. He watched coldly as a hellhound with human hands crawled out of the monitor’s mouth, letting out a low growl while scratching the ground with those hands.
The monitor rubbed his aching jaw, seeming to recover. He straightened up, pulled a dagger from his waist, and glared at Zhou Mo with murderous intent, his legs still tightly crossed.
"You little runt, it’s two-on-one now."
"A qualified hunter always has a partner. I’m going to peel your skin off, inch by inch!"
Seeing the man spout threats, Zhou Mo laughed softly. He slowly reached up and lifted the top of his own skull.
"Two-on-one?"
"That remains to be seen."
As his brain pulled its own eyeballs out and leaped down, the two empty holes on Zhou Mo’s face looked deeper and deeper in the flickering streetlight.
"A word of advice: my brain doesn't know how to hold back."
