Chapter Thirty-Seven: Homecoming
Returning from his granduncle master’s place, Boss Li still felt that things weren’t so simple. But if his granduncle master was telling the truth, then even Marshal Ye might not understand the real cause. Moreover, the slightly threatening warning from his granduncle master only made Boss Li more certain of his suspicions.
There was something sinister about this war!
What was this nonsense about sacrificing hundreds of thousands of cultivators to wear down the power of the angel army’s ten-winged angels? It simply didn’t add up. The angels weren’t fools. If they’d sent ten-winged angels to rampage through the immortal realm from the start, how could the cultivators have held out until now? Waiting all the way for the arrival of Supreme Immortal Yuan Tian to turn the tide of war?
Besides, the angel army only won the first battle, and afterwards, they were completely suppressed, as if they were just there to die.
Boss Li pounded his head, unable to make sense of it. But he was certain there was a secret behind the war and the mysterious evaporation of the crystals, and even a necessary connection between the two.
“Is my imagination too wild? Or has the war and the slaughter made me nervous?” Boss Li wondered.
Unknowingly, he had already walked into the tent. Xiao Ying came forward and wrapped her arms around his, speaking in a sweet voice, “General, everyone’s ready to go home, just waiting for you.”
In this war, probably no cultivator or even ordinary immortal had earned as many military merits as Boss Li. In the end, out of boredom, he donated eight hundred merits and exchanged them for a sixth-rank battle general just for fun.
Above the battle general was the battle marshal, both divided into six ranks, with the sixth being the lowest rank. Xiao Ying had always been annoyed by this—eight hundred merits, and all he got was such a flashy title.
“It would’ve been better to give them to me!” Xiao Ying pouted, sulking for several days.
Though he had a title, Boss Li’s cultivation was too low. Usually, those who became sixth-rank battle generals had the strength of immortals. Who else but Boss Li could be so absurdly lucky, with merits piling up to the skies?
So, even with his official rank, Boss Li was just a solitary commander.
However, at the rank of battle general, one could recruit their own personal guards, and if strong enough, even establish their own faction.
Feeling the soft, ample pressure against his elbow, Boss Li deliberately nudged back, then lifted Xiao Ying’s chin and asked, “Are you coming with us too?”
“Annoying!” Xiao Ying stomped on Boss Li’s foot, then ran to Gu Linglong, grabbing her sleeve, “Sister, he’s bullying me!”
After months of fighting life and death together, their relationship had improved greatly. Gu Linglong was no longer as stern as before, and Li Chengzhu dared to joke with her from time to time.
They say adversity reveals true feelings—in war, you never know when you might die, and harsh realities had broken the awkwardness between Boss Li and Gu Linglong.
“If he’s bullying you, coming to me won’t help! Just bully him back,” Gu Linglong said with a smile.

“Sister!” Xiao Ying clung stubbornly to Gu Linglong’s hand.
“Ha-ha!” Boss Li let out a lascivious laugh at just the right moment.
“But Xiao Ying, aren’t you going back with your father?” Gu Linglong asked, holding her hand.
Mentioning this, Xiao Ying immediately pouted, “I’m not going with him!”
After months together, Boss Li had figured out the situation in Xiao Ying’s family. Her father wanted her to marry a disciple from a powerful clan, so Xiao Ying ran away, met Gu Linglong, and was somehow saved by her. That’s how she ended up joining the war. If it weren’t for her ancestor protecting her, her father would’ve dragged her home long ago.
“A marriage for profit!” Boss Li sighed. Being alone wasn’t so bad—at least no one controlled you, and you had no burdens.
“With the token from my ancestor, he wouldn’t dare do anything to me,” Xiao Ying said angrily.
“All right, all right, then come back to Rainbow City with your sister,” Gu Linglong comforted her.
“Mm.” Xiao Ying nodded vigorously, like a pecking chick.
“Since everyone’s ready to leave, I’d better go say goodbye to my granduncle master,” Boss Li finally blurted out.
“Hmph!” Xiao Ying snorted, “You just want to see your beautiful granduncle master, don’t you?”
Boss Li’s raised foot paused and dropped. He coughed dryly, “You should go say goodbye to your ancestor too, you little brat! Can’t you see anything?” Then he ran out without looking back.
He hadn’t thought about this before, but Xiao Ying’s words had made him nervous.
He could have sent a jade slip to his granduncle master and ancestor, but Boss Li felt it was more appropriate to do it in person.
Was his heart playing tricks on him?
Boss Li blushed.
When he met his beautiful granduncle master again, Wu Rui was slightly surprised, “Why are you back so soon?”
“Uh, granduncle master, I’m preparing to return to Rainbow City. Please tell ancestor that his disciple-grandson will honor him and listen to his teachings another time.”
“Rainbow City?” The beautiful granduncle master hesitated, “You’re not going back to the Phantom Sword Sect?”
“Page 2/3”
“No!” Boss Li smiled bitterly and shook his head. “Master will be out of seclusion in a little over a year. I’ll wait for him in Rainbow City. As for the Phantom Sword Sect…” Li Chengzhu paused, “I’ll decide then.”
The beautiful granduncle master pondered for a moment. “All right. Ah, those little rascals—one day I’ll go back and teach them all a lesson. Not a shred of discipline among them.”
Seeing the sudden surge of killing intent from his granduncle master, Boss Li couldn’t help but swallow.
Wu Rui glanced at Li Chengzhu and laughed, “I bet you can’t bear to leave your two lovely confidantes, right?”
“Not at all!” Boss Li felt utterly wronged. “I pursue the Dao single-mindedly; feelings mean nothing to me.”
The beautiful granduncle master fluttered her eyelids. “Really? I remember a saying from the mortal world: ‘Lying will make your front teeth fall out!’”
“Cough, cough!” Boss Li nearly choked, unable to catch his breath.
Why are women all the same, regardless of age? Leaving his granduncle master’s place, Boss Li was still feeling frustrated.
The Rainbow City combat squad was finally ready to return.
Of the original one hundred and three members, only eight were left: Gu Linglong, Xiao Ying, Li Chengzhu, Qiu Feng, the Yuan Mu brothers, and two other cultivators in the Grand Ascension stage.
Boss Li carried a plump little creature on his shoulder, gazing in the direction of Rainbow City. He waved his arm and let out a long howl, “Let’s go home!”
Xiao Ying laughed brightly, not caring about anyone’s gaze, and came forward to link arms with Boss Li.
He looked back at the blood-red Red Rock Plateau, where so many souls were buried—so many comrades who had fought by his side would remain there forever.
“Farewell, Red Rock Plateau! Farewell, my countless nameless comrades!”
“I’ll never come back to this damned place!” Li Chengzhu cursed bitterly as he dragged his long shadow, only to be attacked at the waist by Xiao Ying: “Don’t swear!”
